From Bob Thompson:
FTH, p. 641. "the Rev. John Henry MILLER, husband of Jacob GIVHAN's daughter
Elizabeth, was born in Abbeville, South Carolina, the son of Dr. John Henry
MILLER, who married Jane PICKENS, daughter of Gen. Andrew PICKENS and his wife
Rebecca CALHOUN, daughter of Patrick CALHOUN of the aristocratic South Carolina
family.
Dr. MILLER moved with his father to Selma, Dallas Dounty, Alabama, when he was
quite young. He moved to Pontotoc in 1838, settling in the Bankhead Community
east of town. He was educated in private schoools and at Centre College in
Davnville, Kentucky and the University of Miami in Ohio.
Soon after settling in Pontotoc he organized the Spring Hill Old School
Presbyterian Church in the Bankhead Community. He was assisted by Father STUART,
the missionary to the Indians. Of the seven original members of this church
five were of the name MILLER.
In the War Between the States the Rev. MILLER advanced to the rank of Lt. Col.
He was murdered on March 22, 1863 by Yankee renegades while enroute to Ripley,
Mississippi to fill a preaching engagement.
................
John Henry MILLER entered Centre College, Danville, Kentucky in 1828 where he
studied three years, failing health prevented his graduation. He joined Valley
Creek Pres. Church in Dallas Co. Alabama Nov. 1, 1832, but soon transferred to
Miami. In 1835 the family moved to Pontotoc, Mississippi. In Miss. he became a
planter and a Presbyterian Minister. He served out a vacancy in the Mississippi
legislature.
Became Captain, then Major and later Lt. Col of the First Mississippi Cavalry
Regiment. In 1848 he entered seminary at Albany Indiana, remained three months,
called home because of an outbreak of cholera among the negroes of the
plantation and he became infected while waiting on them and was ill many weeks.
Did not return to seminary but contined studies in private. He was lecensed by
Chickasaw Presbytery at College Hill Church near Oxford, Miss. on Oct. 5, 1850
and began his ministry in Wellington Church in Tallahatchie Co. Miss. He was in
the Battle of Shiloh and of Corinth. He was killed one Sunday morning while on
his way to fill an appointment on March 22, 1863. Supposedly his murderers were
disgruntled soldiers who had served under him at Corinth."THE PICKENS FAMILY, by E. M. Sharp (1961):
p. 40. "Brother MILLER was a Presbyterian preacher, served White Zion Church
between Pontotoc and Tupelo, also Ripley, Miss. He was a Lt. Col. during the
Civil War, was in Battle of Corinth. He was killed on the road between Ripley
and Pontotoc , during the war, while returning from a preaching engagement in
Ripley. Shot from ambush."
