Dear Terry ... William Smith Pickens b.6 Feb.1823,d.20 May 1907. His parents
were Martha Smith m. Col. Robert Pickens. Her father was William Smith and her
grandfather was Jeb Smith. I was hoping to find a connection to my Smith
ancestors, but Martha Smith's family does not appear to be related to mine. I
do have several ancestors who are buried in the Pickens Graveyard at the Pickens
Chapel about 7 miles south of Easley, SC. The tombstones of my
gggrandfather (John Allston Smith) and gggrandmother (Rhoda Smith)
apparently are no longer readable. I plan on making a trip there this
August. Friends have visited there for me. Interestingly, my
ggggrandfather's (Joshua Smith) tombstone is inscribed as "1st Lt. GA
Troops, Rev. War". He has a military type tombstone, but the DAR has no
record of him. I personally searched the Nat'l Archives in DC two weeks
ago, and found several general listings for Joshua Smith, but none specific
to any of the GA or SC units. Any suggestions?Perhaps of more interst to you is that I have a gguncle who served under a
Capt. William? Pickens during the Civil War. I have the SC unit
information, correct name for the officer, and which gguncle at home. If
you are interested, I can get the information for you. Thanks again for trying to help out with my search.
Greg
