Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2000
This John M. Neal died during his freshman year at Hiwassee College in
Tennesee. A cousin has his last letter home, and a latter to his parents
after his death written by faculty at Hiwassee College.  His gravesite has
never been located, and it is presumed he was buried in Tennessee, perhaps
in a cemetery used by cousins in the vicinity.  The marker may have been
only wooden, and would have disintegrated.  No one else in his generation
was ever sent away to school, and his nephew (my great-grandfather) was
equally reluctant to trust an only son to any school.

Abraham Belton Neal was born April 22, 1809 and died January 13, 1853.  His
wife Rebecca Pickens Neal was born May 18, 1808 and died October 21, 1875.
They are both buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Mary Ruby Brown wrote the biography for Dr. John M. Neal that is
published in the book Walker County, Georgia Heritage, 1833-1983.  She lists
Benjamin Neal and Elizabeth ---- as the probable parents of Dr. Neal, with no
stated proof.  The probable children of Benhamin Neal listed omit a Joel Neal
who is mentioned in a letter written from Texas by one of Captain Reece Bowen
Neal's brothers.  The lack of documentation on this point is highly suspicious
as Mrs. Brown had a great deal of other documentation to mention.
I think she made a guess or simply connected Dr. John M. Neal to a Neal family
she found in the appropriate South Carolina location at a suitable time.  There
should be a probate record to make this connection firm and reliable, and she
does not cite one.
Dr. John M. Neal married Rebecca Belton on January 10, 1808, and she died July
23, 1873.  She is buried in a Shattuck family plot at Sardis, TX.  Dr. John M.
Neal died June 2, 1839.
Dr. John M. Neal may have arrived in McMinn County, TN about 1827, and is
thought to have moved to Walker County, GA sometime after 1831, though this date
cannot be determined.  He was apparently living in Alabama by 1834, as he is
listed as postmaster at Hickory Level in Taladega County between 1834 and 1838.
Mrs. Neal was still living in Alabama in 1840, but seems to have moved to
Tennessee in late 1841, but was back in Walker County, GA in 1843 and was in
Texas in 1860, where she died.  This frequent movement suggests to me that she
needed care and attention and was incapable of living alone, and was therefore
shuttled among her children or other near relatives until she found a stable
living situation in Texas.

"Mrs. Roy Brown is a cousin of mine who spent a great deal of energy on
genealogical pursuits in the 1970s [but her resources were limited, and some of
the early information may have errors]...
The documentary information about Dr. John M. Neal is very limited, aside from
US Census records.  There is one partially-burned scrap of paper in his
handwriting, kept among records for his estate.  My mother currently owns these
estate papers....
Dr. John M. Neal resided for a period of several years in Walker County, GA,
where his son Abraham Belton Neal and that son's descendants settled
permanently. These Neals helped to found the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in
West Armuchee Valley, and many of them are buried there.
The Neals were punctilious about grave markers at Pleasant Hill. Abraham
Belton Neal and his wife Rebecca Pickens Neal lie side by side under a graveshed
at Pleasant Hill, perhaps the only surviving graveshed in the entire county
today.  It is periodically repaired by Neal descendants.
Because Walker County deed records were burned in a courthouse fire in 1883,
it is thought that the "homesite" of Dr. John M. Neal may have been down a dirt
road leading west from the Pleasant Hill cemetery.  But even this fact
apparently cannot be documented.
The distance from White Plains to Pleasant Hill, and the fact that Dr. John M.
Neal's widow apparently continued to own his Alabama property, would both
suggest burial in Alabama, not in Georgia.
I concluded many years ago that Dr. John M. Neal was essentially a land
speculator. Born and married in South Carolina, he was in McMinn County,
Tennessee by about 1820, and apparently left there in the early 1830s to move to
Walker County, but was in Alabama only a few years later.  I think he liked raw
land from which Indians has just been pushed westward.  Had he lived longer, I
suspect he would have ended up even further west.

I am aware of no information suggesting that Dr. John M. Neal, a highly
elusive character, was buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Walker County,
Georgia.  There are Alabama records for expenses in connection with his funeral,
and it would have been highly unusual for a body to have been transported the
necessary distance for burial in Georgia.  Dr. Neal's widow continued to live in
Alabama.
Unfortunately, the Benton County, AL, courthouse records burned during the
Civil War. I was able to find several random issues of a local newspaper that
have been microfilmed, including one in which Dr. Neal offered his plantation
and cotton gin and grist mill for sale.  When I went to the supposed location of
this property, I found a modern orchid grower.
I cannot tell from your entry who purports to be your source for the names of
Dr. Neal's parents.  Many people have searched for this information, always
without firm conclusions.
