"Thomas GILLESPIE was of Scotch-Irish descent -- migrated from Ireland before
1740 with his brothers James and William landing in Philadelphia - going west to
Lancashire County - then south into Virginia settling on Stuart's Creek of the
Cowpasture River, a branch of the James River.
His will in Augusta County, June 15, 1790 lists his wife Eleanor, sons: John,
Thomas II, Jacob, Samuel, James and William; Daughters: Mary DONALY, Hannah
JONES, Jean, Eleanor II, and Ann..."

about 1838. The younger children went to Fayette Co., Tenn. to live near
their grandfather and uncles there....
"James Madison PICKENS - b. 1814, was living in Fayette Co. Tenn in 1850.
It is said by members of the family that he went to Arkansas later where he
died. He had only one daughter* [*see cemetery inscriptions, below]. [He]
married Mrs. Emily M. CRAWFORD, August 27, 1845 in Marshall Co., Mississippi.
She was the widow of Robert CRAWFORD whom she had married May 31, 1838 in
Marshall Co., Miss. She had three children by CRAWFORD and one by PICKENS...
1. Carolyn CRAWFORD b. 1839 in Miss.
2. Mary E. CRAWFORD b. 1841 in Miss.
3. Sarah R. CRAWFORD b. 1843 in Miss.
