E. M. Sharp, PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH:
 p. 125.  "William Reubenn PICKENS - Lawrence Co., Alabama. At present we have
no leads as to whose son he was. The curtain rises on him in Bedford Co., Tenn,
where he is shown in the census of 1820. At that time he and his wife were above
25 years of age. He died in Lawrence Co., Alabama around 1825. Some descendants
state that he was born in South Carolina. However, his son in 1880 census stated
his father was born in Kentucky. He went to Lawrence where he secured a tract of
land in 1818 near Mount Hope. He moved his family there in 1821. he built a
house that stood until 1928. James D. PICKENS, his son, was carried to this
house in 1821 when he was two years old. When William Reuben PICKENS died his
estate was settled under the name of William PICKENS, by Moses CUNNINGHAM as
administrator...[brother of the widow, Mary CUNNINGHAM PICKENS]"

ISRAEL PICKENS, Lawrence Co, AL, by Marjorie Parsley, April 1986:
"... ISRAEL and WILLIAM PICKENS, his son, were on the 1812 tax list of Giles
Co., Tenn. Also listed were his uncle ANDREW PICKENS (his mother's brother), and
his cousins WILLIAM G. and JAMES PICKENS.
Probably in 1819, ISRAEL PICKENS moved to Lawrence Co., Ala.  No land records
have been found for him (the first deed book far the county is missing). His
probable son, WILLIAM PICKENS "of Lawrence County", bought land there early in
1819, and ISRAEL may have been living on the property, Many of ISRAEL's
neighbors in the 1820 census had bought public lands in Township 7, Range 9
west, near WILLIAM's tract.
In the 1830 census, MARY (CUNNINGHAM) PICKENS, WILLIAM's widow, had some of
the same neighbors ISRAEL had in the 1820 census.
From census records and the probate records of his son, JOSEPH PICKENS,
ISRAEL's children were probably:
1. WILLIAM PICKENS, born about 1790-94, Married MARY A. CUNNINGHAM in
Tennessee about 1814, He was living in Alabama in 1819, but bought land in
Bedford Co., Tenn., from his in-laws in 1820 and was listed in the 1820
census there,  He died in 1825 in Lawrence County...

My ggg-grandfather was John F. Key born January 24, 1810 in Virginia. He was
the son of Dabney Center Key and Elizabeth "Betsy" Larson. John married
Elizabeth Ann Pickens (b. about 1812 in Tenn.) on December 22, 1836 in Lawrence
Co., Alabama. Elizabeth was the daughter of Israel Pickens. Is there anyone
researching this line who could help me with dates and places of death on John
F. and Elizabeth Pickens Key?

Hi Terry... I have been busy comparing the 1850 Lawrence County, AL Census to
your information and I wanted to share my thoughts with you. The two households
below were listed in this order in the 1850 census. The ( ) contain additional
names to further clarify relationships. Other information or opinions regarding
certain individuals are indicated below by the asterisks.
.............
Pickens, John K.....27M..Ala. *(John Knox Pickens)
"       Susan......22F.. "    (Mary Susannah Clark)
"       William.....2M.. "    (William A. Pickens)
"       Sarah.......1F.. "  **(Sarah Anne Pickens)  Pickens,
Joseph.....50M..S.C.  (Joseph J. Pickens)
"       Mary.......60F..N.C.  (Mary Ann Cunningham)
"       Prian J....14F..Ala.
Oglesby, John.......17M.. "
..............
Key, John...........40M..Va.   (John F. Key)
"   Elizabeth......38F..Ten.  (Elizabeth Ann Pickens)
"   Joseph.........12M..Ala.
"   Mary...........10F.. "
"   Elizabeth.......9F.. " ***(Susanna Elizabeth Key) .................
"   Margaret........6F.. "    (Margaret Key Boley)
"   George..........2M.. "    (George Dabney Key)  Wilson, William.....21M.. "

..................
*JOHN KNOX PICKENS was in my opinion the son of William Reuben and Mary
Cunningham Pickens rather than William's brother as your information indicates.
Several things led me to this conclusion.  To begin with the large age
difference between the firstborn, William, and John Knox immediately raised a
red flag. Also, there was a passage in the Sharp book stating that William moved
to Lawrence County, Alabama in 1821 with his firstborn son, James, and that he
had an unnamed son born between 1820 and 1830.  According to the census
information, John K. Pickens was born about 1823 in Alabama.  This would further
support Sharp's account that William had moved to Alabama and had  another son.
Finally, Mary Pickens was living in the household of John K. Pickens in the 1850
census which led me to believe that she was much closer to John than just a
former sister-in-law.
.........................
**SARAH ANNE PICKENS was unfortunately not my great-great grandmother.  The
great information you sent made that clear immediately.
..........................
***SUSANNA ELIZABETH KEY married my great-great-great grandfather, John L.
Heflin.  Susanna was born in Alabama on December 13, 1840.  She married John
sometime after 1858 and was found in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Oktibbeha County,
MS Censuses.  We believe that she died and was buried in Oktibbeha County, MS
some time before 1900.
Well, Terry, your information has helped me immensely. Unfortunately this
means that I could establish no family ties to the Pickens family.  You can also
see that my information on the Key family is sketchy at best.... Once again,
thanks for everything.... Karen Hines"

"... I am ... trying to find out anything I can about Elizabeth Key, aka
Susanna Elizabeth Key, the daughter of Elizabeth Ann Pickens and John F. Key.
Would you happen to have any information on that family and on Elizabeth Key in
particular?
Also, listed next to the household of John F. Key in the 1850 Lawrence County,
Alabama Census was John K. Pickens.  I believe that he was the brother to
Elizabeth Ann Pickens and son of William Pickens and Mary Cunningham.  I am
looking for any information on he and his family especially his daughter, Sarah,
who I believe to be my great-great grandmother.  Also, would you happen to know
if these Pickens were of Indian descent?  I have noticed that some of the
Pickens did have Indian ties and my great-great grandmother, Sarah, was known to
be of Indian descent.
Any help on these two families would be greatly appreciated. :)
