Research by my predecessors, Mr. Monroe Pickens and Dr. A. L. Pickens, indictes that the Pickens in America have varied Origins. The name appears from early times in Scotland and England in different forms, and indeed seems to have variants in other languages. Like may other family names, Pickens may havae originated as a name from several
wholly independent sources. The name is found in Lowland Scoth dialect spelled "PICEN" and has become generally spelled in Europe PICKEN, The final "s" has been added only in America. When the plantations of Scotch people began to be made in North Ireland after James VI of Scotland, became James I of England (1603), some Picken families migrated to North Ireland. The earliest settlements of them appears to have been made in County Antrim, The
Following notes give evidence:
1. List of householders in Ballymoney, County Antrim in 1766 show JAMES PICKEN.
2. The hearth Money Roll for County Antrim for 1669 shows: (a household tax).

3. List of Wills proven in Diocese of Clogher, Counties Faramagh and
Tryone, there appears the will of JOHN PICKIN, of Cavanaleck, County
Tryone, 1679.

ANDW. PIKAN of Donagheady appointed member of committee, June 1, 1708.
William Picking elder from Carrickfergus, June 15,1836.Traditions in several emigrating Picken families to America show they came from Ballymoney Parish in County Anatrim. Members of the Picken family still live there.
Notes on Robert Sr.
William Picking elder from Carrickfergus, June 15,1836.
Traditions in several emigrating Picken families to America show they came from Ballymoney Parish in County Anatrim. Members of the Picken family still live there.THE FRENCH TRADITION:
General Andrew Pickens in his letter to General Lee in 1811 made the following statement: "My father and mother came from Ireland. My father's progenitors emigrated from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. (Appendix No. I)"
{NOTE: Recently, I had someone check the listing of emigree from France after the Edict. There is not any listing for a Robert or Andre (Andrew) Pickin, Picken, Picon, Pican. Neither is there any listing for a Lady Ester J BONNEAU. It is my assumption that Robert married and moved to Ireland BEFORE the Edict, probably before1667. I believe that the Robert showing in the Hearth Tax of 69 is in reality the same as William and Israel's father.}jcp1994
There seems to be some support for the claim that one Robert PICON, a Scotchman or Briton at the court of France was a Protestant who fled from Scotland in 1661 to avoid peresecution of Charles II. He may have gone to France in the days when there was a close alliance between Scotland and France. In France he is said to have married Madam JeanBonneau, also a protestant. They fled France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685, annulling all privileges granted to Protestants by his grandfather Henry IV. Tradition continues that they went to Scotland, later to Northern Ireland, among their religious kinsmen, the Presbyterians.
{NOTE: I believe that Robert and his new bride Ester Jane Bonneau Pickin went to Scotland, then to his Family in Northern Ireland. ie: UnNamed Pican and his widow Un Named Unknown Pican. I believe that there Robert and Ester set up their home amongst his brothers and mother. I also believe that one of Robert's brothers was Andrew. The forebears of the New England line. In letters written to Jim Pickens and my father Sidney Pickens by Lois Pickens Tanner. Lois mentions that Thomas' kin, state that Thomas' father was Andrew. This statement lead for many years tobelieve that the fathers name was either Robert or Andrew and later became Robert Andrew. Without proof, I believe that Thomas' father was Andrew brother of Robert and that William and Israel's father was indeed Robert.}jcp 1994
Miss Eliza Pickens, great granddaughter of General Andrw Pickens in a paper prepared for D.A.R. said: "General Andrew Pickens first home was in Buck's Co. Penn. The Pickens were French Huguenots and left France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685. General Picken's great grandfather, ROBERT PICKENS held agood position in France and with every inducement to remain. He refused to live under Roman Catholic rule. He married an accomplished young widow, Madam Bonneau."
