The Romance of a Sesquicentennial Church" by Glen A. Toomey may

provide  some clue:

Mister Cate was the descendent of one of two Cate brothers who

came to  Norfolk, Virginia, from

England, in 1635. Later the descemdents of thes two brothers

moved to  Orange County, North

Carolina, from which John Cate Sr. came to Dumplin.
