MOTHER, Mary E. Hiatt 1875 - 1930.From a letter by William sent to his nephew, Mr. Sanford May, Los Angeles, CA. 7 Apr. 1935.
Dear Nephew: Your letter of the 11th inst. was rec'd this a.m. from Jesse. I'm replying to same will say that I am only partially prepared to answer same intelligently. -- but I am sure I will furnish cheerfully. 1st my grandmothers' name on Father's side, was Lundy - Jemima Lundy -- and my grandfather's mothers name was Burchim. And the rest of the questions are answered by the form I made out on a separate sheet. - One of four cousins in Indiana, Bertha Hiatt, (John Ellis Hiatts daughter) told me once when I was there, (I think in 1931) that we have a cousin in Henry Co., Ind. who was
tracing our ancestry for the same purpose you are in this -- and she had learned according to pretty reliable information -- that there were three brothers who came over from the old country (Holland) along in the 16th Century -- and the name in the first place was "Van Hiatt", Ha! Ha! So now, -- If any man you should happen to meet and he should call you a Dutch, don't be offended -- he might be telling you the truth.
I have learned that at the time when most immigrants landed in the New England States, they drifted into Colonies - for just The English settled in N.Y. - The French, the Germans & Hollanders went further south, Penn., Va., and the Carolinas. -- and further proof, My grandfather, William Hiatt, was born in North Carolina - his wife Jemima Hiatt - or Jemima Lundy b. in N.Y. as she was English - or her ancestry traces back that way.
Now on my mothers side, -- Her father - Wilson Hunt's mother was a Wilson - a tall Scotch lady with Auburn hair and brown eyes - hence, here is where the red hair comes from in my mothers family also in Uncle John Hunts family and
others. Now, - when it comes to saying just what our Nationality is, - it's some question, Dutch, German, Scotch and English, at least thats all we Know of, - might be others though I trust it won't get any worse.
If you are successful in completing the Genealogy of our family, I am sure I would appreciate a copy of same, and thank you indeed.
As to my health, can say I have had a good Winter am feeling fine most of the time, - a little Rhumatic but not serious.Your Uncle W. C. Hiatt

Having furnished you with what information I am able to, and hoping it may prove to be beneficial to you in your task, I will not burden you with a longer letter at this writing.
We are all well here at Boon, i.e. Kenneths family & myself -- Haven't seen Clare's family since in January but hear from them frequently through others - and by letter also.
Was glad to hear from you Sanford, and to learn you and your family are well - and have a job, which is no little thing anymore - can't say just when and how we are going to get out of this mixup.
