Edmund (Edward ) Col. PHINNEY

At age thirteen, Edmund helped his father settle Gorham -- Edmund felled the first tree. Elected: 1766-1773, 1775, 1781 and 1782. Selectman for Gorham, Maine. In each year he is listed with 2 other men, with his name sometimes recorded first. Was an distinquished officer (Col.) of the Revolutionary War. The following is quoted from: Pierce, Josiah. A History of the Town of Gorham, Maine. Portland: Foster & Cushing, and Bailey & Noyes, 1862. Pages 198-199. Edmund, eldest son of Capt. Phinney, came to this town with his father, and felled the first tree for settle; he grew up a large, stalwart man, active and fearless. When about 24 years old, he was severely wounded by a party of Indians. He was accustomed to the use of a musket, and was an expert hunter, and was skillful in all woodcraft. He was a brave and successful warrior in Indian conflicts. He had a decided passion for military life. He held a Captain's commission in 1772. In January, 1775, he received a Colonel's commission, and in May of that year, he marched a regiment to Cambridge, and when the British troops evacuated Boston the next year. Col. Phinney's regiment was the first of our troops to enter the town.
In the autumn of 1776, Col. Phinney and his Regiment had a tedious march to Ticonderoga, and took part in the military movements of the northern army in that and the following year. After the surrender of Burgoyne, being out of health, and having a wife and eight small children to provide for, he resigned his commission had returned to his farm, which is the one now called the Woodbury place, and Col. Phinney's house stood where the Woodbury house is now [1862] standing. Col. Phinney was also much in civil life. Before the Revolutionary war broke out he was, for many years, a selectmen, one of the Committee of Safety and Correspondence, Delagate to several important political conventions, a Representative to the General Court three years. He was and rulong elder in the Congregatioal Church in Gorham. He was a patriotic, noble man, of unsullied character, and generous hospitality. His integrity was never doubted. [1903] "Elizabeth or Betty was the first to be married [of Clement and Sarah] ; she married Edmund Phinney after the close of the Indian War, probably in 1750." "Mrs. Elizabeth M. Phinney died Aug. 6, 1795, aged 65; she was a smart, energetic, Christian woman, a good wife, a kind mother, much respected and beloved by all who knew her." John Capt. PHINNEY

Birth: Apr. 8, 1693 Barnstable Barnstable County Massachusetts, USA
Death: Dec. 29, 1780 Gorham Cumberland County Maine, USA
Capt. John Phinney(4) was the eldest son of Deacon John Phinney of Mass., and Sarah P. (Lombard) PHINNEY, and born at Barnstable, MA.  He was the founder of Gorham, ME and known as "Capt. John". At this time Maine was part of Mass. and the soldiers of the Indian wars felt that they should lay claim to the territory. In 1727, after many delays, Massachusetts granted to the officers and soldiers, to each of one hundred acres.  His eldest son was later the distinguished COL Edmund PHINNEY, of Revolutionary War fame.  Capt. John married Sept. 25, 1718, Martha, daugh of John and Patience Coleman of Barnstable. About 1732, he removed with his family from Barnstable, MA to Falmouth, ME and settled in Gorham in 1736. At beginning of French and Indian War, Capt. Phinney's and eight other families moved into the fort. Here those brave settlers, together with a handful of soldiers furnished by Mass. defended the fort for fourteen years against repeated attacks of the Indians.  Capt. Phinney was a brave, energetic, sagacious man, who "looked after the interests of the little colony that grew up around him, with the affection and discretion of a father. He died Dec. 29, 1780, aged 87 yrs. His widow died same age, Dec. 16, 1784, and both were bur. in Old Cem. in Gorham village.

They had ten children:

3) Stephen, b. 1725;
4) Martha, 1727;
5) Patience, 1730, m. Thom. Watson;
6)John, Jr., b. 1732;
7) Sarah, 1734, m. Sam Leavett;
8) Mary Gorham, 13 Aug. 1736, m. Jas. Irish. She was first white child born in Gorham;
9) Coleman, 1738, d. young; and
10) James, b. 1741.
