FIFTH GENERATION: GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN OF WILLIAM HIATT

(847.)     ESTHER HIATT (229.)  (38.)  (4.)  (1.):
b. c1804, NC.; m. in Wayne Co., Indiana, 3 November 1820, to (609.)  JOSIAH HIATT, son of (150.)  Jonathan and Rachel (Williams). Hiatt; b. c1795/6, Grayson Co., Va.; d. 1852, Grant Co., Indiana. (They were third cousins.)  For descendants see No. (609.)

In 1947 Mr. Chase M. Hunt wrote: "The clue I have reference to is concerning one Josiah Hiatt who married Esther Hiatt who was the daughter of William Hiatt and Elizabeth Sulgrove. My own family tradition says that the name of his wife was Esther Hiatt but you may be right in that; anyway Easter (or Esther). Hiatt had several brothers one of whom (Aaron). was my great-great-grandfather. My grandmother who celebrated her 88th birthday the other day, is still living in Van Nuys, California. When I was a baby my great-great-grandfather Hiatt had just passed away and my great-grandfather was still living. Aaron Hiatt was of course the son of William Hiatt and Elizabeth Sulgrove. Now of this Sulgrove family, which is a very interesting one, I know very little but I do know that two Sulgrove sisters married two Hiatt brothers in NC., and that the sister of Aaron Hiatt who was reputedly Easter Hiatt, married a cousin who was Josiah Hiatt. There was a family of Sulgroves in Germantown, Ohio and what relation to the two girls who married Hiatt brothers is, I still do not know but would like to find out."

Later same year Mr. Hunt wrote: "My mother was the only child and daughter of Mr. Eugene L. Chase who married Miss Clara Viola Brown whose mother was Mary Ann Hiatt the daughter of Aaron Hiatt. My grandmother is still living in Van Nuys, California at the age of nearly 89 and is in better health than a lot of people and in full possession of her faculties and surprisingly active for her age. I have seen and talked to
my great-grandmother whose maiden name was Hiatt. She was then a very old lady. She was small and could easily walked under my outstretched arm. (I am 5' 11 1/2").….My grandmother still remembers Aunt Esther Hiatt and although the name was spelled Esther it was pronounced with long E. like in Easter thus causing a natural confusion. She married Josiah Hiatt." (R114).
