John B. HIATT

August 5, 1823.

Interesting Old Papers Found
Write up about John B. Hiatt and Sarah Kenworthy marriage 1816.  I don't know the date of his newspaper clipping.  Harvey's mother died in 1928  and Harvey in 1953.  After Harvey's mother died, the papers went to her daughter, Hila Cox, then to her son, Warner Cox.  Warner had no children.  The papers have disappeared - possibly destroyed.  Shame.  Note from Marion Johnson
In looking over some old papers of his mother's Harvey Hiatt found two very interesting old documents.  One the marriage certificate of his grandparents.  It is interesting from the fact that the old Quaker form of ceremony was used in which the services of a minister were dispensed with and the coupld appearing in public meeting took their own vows.  It is noteworthy too, that this marriage took place in 1816, the year that Indiana was admitted to the Union.  A copy of the certificate appears below:
"John Hiatt, son of Jonathan Hiatt of the county of Champaign, state of Ohio, and Rachel his wife, and Sarah Kenworthy, daughter of Elishia Kenworthy of the county of Highland, and state aforesaid and mary his wife, having
declared their intention of marriage with each other before a montly meeting of society of Friends, held at Clear Ceek, according to the good order used amongst them, and having consent of parents, their said proposal of marriage was allowed of by the said meeting.  Now these are to certify whom it may concern, that for the accomplishing of their said intention this seventeenth day of the tenth month, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and sixteen, they the said John Hiatt and Sarah Kenworthy appeared in a public meeting of the said people held at Clear Creek meeting house in Highland Co., aforesaid, and the said John Hiatt, taking the said Sarah Kenworthy by the hand, did, openly declare, that he took her, the said Sarah Kenworthy to be his wife, promising with divine assisitance, to be unto her a loving and faithful husband until death should separate them; and then, in the same assembly the said Sarah Kenworthy did not like manner declare, that she took him, the said John Hiatt, to be her husband, promising with divine assistance to be unto him a faithful wife until death should separate them.  And the said John Hiatt and Sarah Kenworthy (she according to the custom of marriage, assuming the name of her husband) as a full confirmation thereof, did, then and there to these present set their hands, John Hiatt and Sarah Hiatt.
We who were present among others at the above meeting have also subscribed our names as witnesses thereto the day and year aforesaid."  And there follows the signatures of thiry-five persons who witnessed the marriage.
Among Mrs. Hiatt's other papers was found a goverment land grant to Elisha Kenworthy, Harvey Hiatt's great grandfather, containing 80 acres and located in the West Half of the North West quarter of section 21, in township, 19 N, of range 4 west, in the districit of Terre Haute and State of Indiana.  The document is singed by President James Monroe.  It was issued in 1823 - the same year as the famous Monroe Doctrine.

John B. Hiatt had entered 80 acres of land in 1830 and another 80 acres in 1832 which man him 160 acres.
John B. Hiatt, Silas Hiatt and Bill Hiatt and I think Harry L. Hiatt all, at one time or another, belonged to the Horse Thief Detective Assocation.  There were many horses still in use in Montgomery County well up into the 1920's.
When John B. Hiatt and Sarah (Kenworthy) Hiatt died, their son John Hiatt, brother to our Silas ended up with all the families papers, Family bible, wedding papers, all the original land grants of sheepskin, etc.  When son John died, his daughter Hila May kept them.  When she died they went to her son, Warner Cox.  Warner married Katie Marie ---.  Evidently Katie Marie didn't have much in common with the rest of the famiy, because when I tried to trace the papers, Little Margaret McGuire, tells me that everyone would like to know.   She says that with Warners demise, they suspect so did the papers.  Meaning I suppose that Katie Marie burned them.
This was back in the early 1970's that Margaret told me this, said that Helen Cox Joy had been trying to find them.
In 1982, Aunt Florence was telling me that Helen Cox Joy at one time did have them and loaned themt to Aunto Nelle.  After Aunt Nelle died, Helen Cox Joy called Aunt Florence and said if she could find them she would like them back.  Aunt Florence said she went throught everything and could not find them.

Sarah Hiatt ( this is Sarah Kenworth Hiatt - born 1795) must not be forgotten
in these annals of the medical fraternity of this county.  "Many a flower is
born to blush unseen and wate its sweetness on the desert air"
It is a pleasure to rescue from an unmerited oblivion the self-sacrificing
labors of one of Montgomery County's noble and picturesque women of pioneer
life- Sarah Hiatt - noted for her obstetrical work.  She was born September 12, 1795 in North Carolina and was the oldest child of Elisha and Mary Kenworth, who moved to Marion County, Indiana in 1821 and to this county in 1823, settling in the wild woods three miles northeast of Crawfordville on Sugar Creek, later located at a point just to the east of Darlington.  She married John Hiatt in 1816.  She was courageous and self-reliant and began obstetric work about 1836 and continued in active practice.  During a peroid of forty-two years, she accouched between four and five hundred women, with the loss of none.  Her record of cases is lost, and its a pity too.  She never made a charge but accepted compensation given her.  This information is kindly given by her daughter, Mrs. Matilda McClure, now 88 years of age, who had a twin sister two died a few years ago.  She was the good Old Quaker or Friends Stock, with an heredity among the best and departed this life February 13, 1877 in her 82nd year.  Silas and John were her sons.  Her heroism as a horsewomen was proverbial and regardless of season, flood or storm, Mother Hiatt answered every appeal for help.  She has gone to her reward.

Taken from Journal-Review (Crawfordsville) April 6, 1978
Historical Series - Earl Doctors
by Pauline Walters
Two women in early days became well known doctors. Sarah (Kenworth) Hiatt was
born 9-12-1795, a daughter of Elisha and Mary Kenworth, came with her parents
to Franklin Twp., in 1823 and also with her husband John Hiatt, whom she had
married in 1816.  She began obstetric work from 1836 to 1868.  She took care of between 400 and 500 women and never lost a case.  She was a good horsewomen and regardless of season, flood or storm, answered every call.
Another lady doctor was Martha (Hutchings) Grittith, wife of Dr. Thomas
Griffith.  She began to study medicine in 1864 and was the first women to
graduate from a medicine college in 1870.  She was in obstetrics, too.  She and Dr. Griffith lived in Darlington until 1888, when they moved to Crawfordville.

Elisha Kenworthy, Sarah K. Hiatt's father had 240 acres of land. Elisha's
wife, Sarah's mother, died in 1845 when Elisha was 74 years old.
Elisha moved in with John B. and Sarah (according to the 1850 census) and
at that time he deeded his 240 acres of land  to John B. Hiatt for his lifetime - then it was to be divided among Elisha's other heirs.  As it worked out, John B. died six years later in 1851 - the land was probated in 1856 - and Elisha died four years later in 1860 at the age of 89 years.
In file at Courthouse - Probate John B. Hiatt 1856 file 30 (died 1851)
Silas Hiatt, Administrator (Silas as Administrator apparently had the land sold in 1856 and there are receipts from each of the heirs for their share of the money from their part of the 240 acres of land.
$200.00 to John Kenworth, son  200.00 to Lydia Booher, daughter
200.00 to Silas Kenworthy, son  200.00 to Thomas Kenworth, son
200.00 to Ira Middleton, heir to deceased daughter, Rachel
 33.33 to Jesse Cadwallader
 33.33 to Seth Cadwallader
 33.33 to Edwin Cadwallader
33.33 to Mary Cadwallader Warner, heirs of deceased daughter, Tamer
66.66 to Isaac Cadwallader, guardian of Ira Cadwallader and Elisha
Cadwallader, minor heirs of Tamer.
There was no receipt from his other daughter, Sarah.  Perhaps she kept a
piece of land or it was worked out someother way.  Elisha wrote his will in 1854 - probated in 1860 - and Sarah was named in the will with the rest of the heirs.
(Interesting to note her that Elisha's daughter, Lydia Booher, was Silas Hiatt's wife, Elzira Booher's stepmother.)
The inventory of personal effects was listed as $2573.75 which was a lot
considering a red calf was appraised at $1.00 bedstead 50 cents, and other
things in the 5 cent, 10 cent and 25 cent category.  Horses however were a
going commodity being appraised at $50.00.  If the 240 acres of land sold for
$1200 as above, land at that time was going for $5.00 an acre.
In the file just a bunch of little handwritten notes and it would take
time to figure it all out.  I did notice where Silas paid $6.500 to Soloman
Barnhart for a coffin for John B. Hiatt.  This seems odd to us, but with land
seeling at $5.00 an acre, it was more then an acre of land would bring - at
today prices it would be  comparable.

Silas HIATT

From the Harmon Hiatt booklet, written in 1895.  I find in Crawfordsville a certain William Hiatt, who says his father is Silas Hiatt, and his father is John Hiatt, and his grandfather's father again was John Hiatt, which would carry him back to be the son of George Hiatt, and a brother of William Hiatt and Christopher and an uncle of Amer Hiatt and his brothers and sisters.  This is evidently the missing John Hiatt.  They came from Carolina to Indiana, they say in 1823, and were Quakers.  They perhaps belonged to some meeting a little way out of the common travel and became estranged to our part of the family.  The name of Silas would suggest a relationship.

Mary DAVIS

Davis, A Quaker Family by Eleanor Davis, 1985.  D/o William Davis and
Elizabeth Huff.  See pg. 508, 509.

Mary Davis was born and reared in Grayson Co., Va.  See Hinshaw Vol 1 pg
1004.  She probably knew her future husband there.  Although born in Guilford
Co., N.C., Silas Hiatt was taken to the Grayson Co. area as an infant and
remained there until about 1813.
In 1819 Mary Davis was given a certificate to Whitewater MM, Ind. to
accompany her recently married older sister, Keziah Potter.  They went to
Randolph Co., Ind. and belonged to Cherry Grove MM.  It was there, at Center
MM, that Mary was married in 1821.  See Heiss, pt.2, pg. 266.
In 1821 the Hiatts were set off with White River MM, Randolph CO., Ind.
When the Hicksite split developed, Silas and his family were among the
followers of Elias Hicks, and Silas and Mary were disowned by the Orthodox
meeting at White River MM in 1829.  The White River records did not list the
children of Silas adn Mary Davis) Hiatt, but according to the Hiatt genealogy, they had children Luzena, Elizabeth, Christopher C., Rachel, Jonathan S., and four others.  See HH pg. 270.
In 1836 White River MM gave a certificate to Springfield MM to Louzenza,
Lydia and Elizabeth Hiatt.  Luzena and Elizabeth were reported by Springfield
MM as joining the Christian Church in 1846.
At some point the family must have been attatched to Whitewater Hicksite
MM, for its records listed the birth dates of "Luzona" and Rachel W., and the
deaths of Lydia H. and Elizabeth, children of Silas and Mary.
Silas moved to Wabash Co., Ind. in 1850.  He was listed there in Noble Twp. in the 1850 census with children Elizabeth, 20, Christopher, 17; Rachel, 12; and Jonathan, 10.  Mary's age was given as 50.  She and her husband probably both died in Wabash Co.
Christopher was a private in the 5th Indiana Cavalry, 90th Rgt. in the
Civil War and became a surgeon.  He later practiced medicine at Ridgeville.
