Asael SMITH Jr.

President Asael Smith, brotehr to the aged Patriarch Joseph Smith, died at Iowaville, Wapello Co., IA, on the 22nd July, 1848, aged 75 years and two months.  He was a strong advocate for the Book of Mormon in 1830 and has been a fim supporter of the cause of Zion ever since - and his days werew shortened by exposure to cruelty and mob violence.  He waws ordained a patriarch in 1844.  His principles, precepts, and examples werre worthy of imitation, and shed a lustre that does honor to his high and holy calling.  He died of a long and painful illness, and has left a numerous family to morun his loss" (George Albert Smith to Orson Pratt, Oct. 20, 1848, Coucil Bluffs, Iowa, Latter Day Saints' Millennial Star 11 (1849):13
