Sent by Helen Dennis.  Stories as told to Helen by Gerald Putnam as he remembered them from his Grandfather Watson S. Hiatt.

James Anderson Hiatt was considered a rather wealthy man, who owned a plantation and had many fields.  He entered the civil war to fight for the North.  When the war ended he walked home.  As he approached the plantation he could see that many of the buildings were burned and the fields ravaged.  His children saw him coming and ran up the hill to meet him, eager to tell him of the hardships that had occured while he was gone.  The livestock had been driven off, and what the soldiers didn't use or take, they destroyed, including cutting the stirrups from little Watson's saddle.  James Anderson gathered his children into his arms and consoled them, "We still have the land", he said.  They started the rebuilding process at once.

James Anderson Hiatt had slaves on his platation but he freed them. However, the slaves refused to leave their "massah", so he gave them a salary and kept them on as freed men.

Perlina COGDILL

D/o Jacob Cogdill and Sarah Rogers
Sent by Darlene Peterson and Steven Wolfe.

Perlina Cogdill was the seventh child born to Jacob and Sarah (Rogers)
Cogdill who were married in TN about 1818.  Jacob was born 3 January 1795 in NC and he was the oldest child born to Catherine and Frederick Cogdill.  When
Jacob was about five years of age, he left NC with his parents and traveled by oxen drawn covered wagon to KY.  They lived there for several years and about 1805 they journeyed to TN and lived in Lincoln County until 1820.
The Cogdills were energetic people and industrious farmers.  They, like
many of the eastern famers of that time, were ready and willing to "go west"
and experiement with the new farming opportunities that were believed to be
found in the West.  The Cogdills were, obviously, people with foresight and
they met the challenge to farm in the West with hope and trust.
When Clay County, MO was opened for settlements, Catherine and Frederick
Cogdill patented a tract of land in that county and moved their family there to live about 1821.  Jacob and Sarah Rogers Cogdill remained in TN with their
young children.  Catherine and Frederick Cogdill were the parents of four other sons: namely Josiah, William, Drewry, and Daniel.  Their youngest children were daughters, Ann and Elizabeth Cogdill.
Jacob Cogdill left TN and moved his family to Clay County, MO in 1825.
Jacob patented a tract of land in Clay County and, when Platte County, MO was
opened for settlements in 1837, he patented a tract of land north of Weston, MO was opened for settlements in 1837, he patented a tract of land north of
Weston, MO.  He moved his family to his 120 acres of land in Township 54 and 55 N. Randge 35 W. in Platte County which was bordered on the north by Buchanan County, MO.  Jacob and his brothers also patented tracts of land in Buchanan County and at points westward.
Jacob and Sarah Cogdill were the parents of seven daughters and three
sons.  James Frederick Cogdill was their oldest son who was born in 1824.
James was married 6 September 1846 to Emeline Frans, the daughter of another
properous farmer.  Twelve children were born to Emeline and James F. Cogdill.
When James passed away 11 October 1901 at his home in DeKalb County, MO he left many descendants to mourn his passing.  James Cogdill was admired by the people who knew him.  He was called "Uncle Jimmie" by his close friends and relatives in the neighborhood.
After the death of Sarah Rogers Cogdill, Jacob Cogdill was married 1
December 1850 to Priscilla Wilkerson Baker in Buchanan County, MO.  Priscilla
had been left a widow with three young children when her husband.  William
Baker, died 15 November 1848 in Buchanan County, MO.
During the trying times when the Civil War turmoil was raging in the US,
Jacob Cogdill, at the age of 66 years, joined the Gentry County, MO Home Guards as a private.  In 1862 and 1863 Jacob joined the 31st Regiment Enrolled MO Militia at Albany, MO and in 1863 he joined the 81st. Regiment Enrolled MO Militia Compnay L at St. Joseph, MO.  Jacob Cogdill was relieved of duty in 1864 because of "over age" at 69 years of age.  He lived to be eighty-four years old.  He passed away 21 January 1879 in Buchanan County, MO.
Catherine and Frederick Cogdill and their sons and daughters had to have
been energetic and industrious people to become the properous farmers which the date have indicated.  The Cogdills pioneered and, Perhaps, encountered many adversities, however, their success in farming may have been partly due to "foresight", which perpared them to meet and withstand adverseness.  The
Cogdills and many other pioneers left tremendous legacy for their many
thousands of descendants to enrich and enjoy - our Heritage.
Perlina Cogdill was born 18 Feb. 1831 and married 19 Dec 1848 to James
Anderson Hiatt in Buchanan Co., MO.  Perlina's Sister, Melissa, was born 27 Jun 1829 and was married 29 Mar 1849 to John H. Hiatt, a younger brother of J.A. Hiatt.  Melissa Cogdill Hiatt passed away 24 March 1867 and is at rest in the Sidney Cemtery at Sidney, IA.  Perlina Cogdill Hiatt passed away at the home of her daugther, Emily Bristow, in Blockton, IA.  The monument in Lot #34 in the Athelston Cemetery bears the followin inscription: "Perlina wife of J.A. Hiatt died May 18, 1895 age 64 yrs. 3 ms."  The epitaph is as follows; "We shall meet again sweet mother, In a brighter home than this, where the anguish of this world of ours, is lost in deathless bliss".
