#89.  James Liddle  400010-00010-0

The name is usually spelled, at least in this family, Liddell.  Also
enumerated in 1820 were William Liddle, (No. 281 in Gwinnett County) cousin of James above, and also in Jackson Co., Joseph (No. 451) and Josiah Little (No. 871), apparently of a different family.

The Liddell (Liddle) family that moved from Abbeville and Pendleton
Districts, S.C., to Jackson and Gwinnett counties, Ga., descends from James
Liddell, born c1712 in Scotland, according to old tradition in the family.  St. John Richardson Liddell (son of Moses, son of Andrew, son of James born c 1712) endorsed a copy of Andrew's Rev. record (Office of the Comptroller General, Coumbia, S.C., May 9, 1857) with the statement that he had heard his father (Moses) say the family migrated to (New) Jersey "after the rebellion of 1745 under the pretender," referring to the Stuart troubles of "the '45" in Scotland.  The family appears to have worked it's way through Delaware, Maryland (William of Gwinnett was born in Annapolis) and to the Carolinas well before the Revolution.
James Liddell born c 1712 died in Abbeville District, S.C., c1796, leaving a will (July 6, 1791/March 28, 1797, Book 1, p. 177, Box 108. Package 2955) in which he named his wife Esther and children.  His children were:

1) Elizabeth b. c1745, died c1808, married c1761 Daniel Keith, born c1740, died c1819 in Franklin Co., Tenn.  Daniel, who appears not to have been closely related to Cornelius Keith and his son Daniel from N.C., living at the same time in Pendelton District, S.C., sold his land on Devil's Fork Creek in Pendleton Feb. 4, 1806, and headed west with other members of his family.

Keith had children 1) Ruth born 1762, 2) Alexander (married Sarah Galey),
3) Nancy (m. John Scott), 4) James, Martha (married Robert Black of Pendleton, 5) Daniel, 6) Andrew, 7) Elizabeth (married Thomas Morrow), 8) Mary (Married Thomas McAllister or McOllister of Pendleton), and 9) Esther (married William Brazelton  in Tenn.

Ruth, born March 25, 1762, married William Liddell Feb. 3, 1784, in
Abbeville District.  William, born in Annapolis, Md., March 10, 1762, was her
cousin;  he was son of John and Rachel Liddell, fought in the Rev., moved from Abbeville to Pendleton District and about 1820 to Gwinnell Co., Ga., where he died Aug. 23, 1836.  Ruth died there April 22, 1845.  William and Ruth had children: (a) Moses (died young); (b) Daniel Wilson Liddell, born Feb. 17, 1786 in Pendleton, married there Feb. 23, 1808, Isabella Liddell, born Jan.  18, 1792 in Pendaleton, died  Aug. 11, 1875 in Gwinnett Co., a daughter of Moses Liddell and Elizabeth Johnson (see below) moved 1814/16 to Franklin  Co. and 1824 to Gwinnett Co., Ga., where he died Nov. 8, 1840.  (c) Mary, born Feb. 2, 1787 in Pendleton, Married THOMAS WEEMS;  (d)  JOHN, died young; (e) ELIZABETH, born Nov. 2, 1790 in Pendleton, married JOHN STEELE;  (f) ROCHEL, born May 2, 1792 in Pendleton, married 25 December 1810, NOCHOLAS MINOR, son of John Minor, moved to Gwinnett Coutny before 1820;  (g) THOMAS, died young;

WILSON LIDDELL (b) above, had children Moses WIlkerson Liddell, married
Elizaeth, daughte ro fJohn and Nancy (Winn) Clower Dec 19, 1839;  William
Grank; James M.; James M.; Elizabeth Ann, married April 14, 1836 to Edwin
PLASTER, lived in DeKalb County;  RUTH ANN, maried Nov. 21, 1839 to HENRY
BROCKMAN;  THOMAS HANEY, married 21 June 1845 to ELIZABETH, dau of Meridith
Collier;  William Coatsworth Pickney, married Jan 23, 1845, Evalyn WYNN;
Daniel WIlson Jr., died unmarried; Isavella Jane, married Dr. Nathaniel Reeder lived in DeKalb County;  James McAlpine, married in Gwinnett COunty 22 Dec. 1857, Piety Amanda Gober.    William Liddell was broght to Abbeville District about 1767 by his uncle Moses Liddell (Flanigan, v. 1, p. 396; much of the data in this sketch comes from Bible and other records collected by Mrs. Cecil H. King, Columbus, Miss., a descendant.
There are extensive additonal records on this family which, since it is not my direct line, will not copy here.   See Gone To Georgia pgs. 20-23, etc.
Children of James fought in the Rev. War, Moses Liddle, Jonah, William and William were enumerated in Pendleton in 1790 along with Andrew Riddle? Liddle
There was a James Little not to be confused with James Liddell and Joseph Killett who witnessed a Deed 3 April 1799, in Jackson Co, by which William Killett bought land on the Middle Fork of Oconee from Thomas McCain of Pendleton Dist. (Quarterly Dec 1924, Page 59)
An older James Little from S.C. with a wife and 2 son and a daughter,
all under 10 years of age, and William Little from S.C. with wife and 1
daughter, where each granted 100 acres in Wilkes Co., Dec 7, 1773.  In 1785
James was taxed on the part of Wilkes that became Elbert Co., on land in Wilkes and Franklin Co. and two slaves.  He sold land on Savannah to Samuel Wimbush of Abbeville, S.C. Feb 21, 1786. And on Aug 9, 1787 he and Isabel Little his wife, wit. a Deed from Georgia and Ann Lumpkin to Nehemiah Howard (Deed FF, Pg, 7).

James Little Sr. and wife Isabel sold 17 Feb 1791, to William Daniel, 214
acres on Savannah (Elbert Deed Book A, Folio 25).  He obtained land in
connection with James McDonald, and Hugh and Helen McDonald of Wilkes Co., sold Dec 14, 1789, to William Little, Wilkes Co., Gunsmith, land on Fallen Creek.
Isaac Little was a witness to the Deed.  (Elbert Book A, Folio 15).  Hugh
Saxon of Elbert wrote his will 17 Feb, 1805 at James Little's in Franklin Co., Georgia, James Little being a witness with Asa Allen, (Elbert Will Book 1805, page 177.)  William Little of Wilkes Co., in the 1820 lottery drew land in Gwinnett Co., and was enumerated in Wilkes Co.; William Liddle (Liddell) was enumerated that year in Gwinnett Co.
...."County seat of Giles Co., Tenn. is Pulask of Jackson Co., Tenn. is
Gainsboro, of Franklin Co., is Winchester.  Most likely as I see it.  I don't
think there is any more information to be obtained from Orange Co. (Paoli is
Co. seat) of Crawford Co.  English is County seat.  Abbeville is county seat of Abbeville, S.C. which probably applies to us.  If we need it, James Liddell's will dated 6 July 1791, proved 27th March 1797 is in Book 1, p. 177, pack #2955, county?"...

See pg. 51 of 1800 Census Index of Pendleton District, S.C.
...."Moses, John, William and William were enumerated in the Pendleton
Distirct in 1790 along with Andrew "Riddle";  in 1800, Moses was still living
in the Anderson County area.  Andrew and his wife, Jean, sold land on
Twelve-Mile Creek, granted him in 1784, to John Stewart from Rockingham County, N.C. in 1791.  Moses was dead by 13 Mar 1804, when his widow Elizabeth sold some land on Devils Fork of Generostee to Elijah Nicholson.
A younger Moses Liddell, born in Pendleton 13 Oct 1786, moved to Franklin
Co., Georgia in 1814 and to Gwinnett Co., by 1825, then to Decatur, Ga., where he died 10 May 1858, survived by his wife, Polly.
William Liddell was born in Annapolis, Md., and went to Abbeville County,
S.C., with his parents in 1767.  His son Daniel, born in Abbeville in 1786,
