The Scott Family
Sent by Robert Brown, Delta, Colo.James K. Scott, a brother in law to the Glenns, was one of DeWitt Country's
earliest and most prominent settlers. He was a native of SOuth Carolina, but
moved early in his life to Indiana with his parents and family. In 1827, he
moved into what was then McLean Country, bring his wife and two sons, Lorenzo
Dow Scott and James W. Scott with him. Five more children were born in
Illinois. They were: Martin H., Crafton P., Jane C., Polly A., and Lucinda.
By the years 1882, Lorenzo, John and Martin H. Scott had died. James and
Crafton were living in Turnbridge Township DeWitt Country, Illinois, and his
three daughters had moved with their families to Missouri.
James K. Scott was the first preacher in the township and preached the
frist sermon in DeWitt Country. Services were held in the cabins of the
pioneers. HE also preformed the first marriage ceremony in DeWitt County.
The first land entries in Turnbridge Township were those of James K. Scott
and Samuel P. Glenn and are dated 31 Nov. 1827.
Between 1839 and 1882, James K. Scott served two successive terms in the
State Legislature. He was the only man to be elected twice in succession.
James K. Scott also served his community as juryman and Judge of the
Circuit Court.
Family group record of E. G. Smith provided a different place of death,
although the same date. He gives it as DeWitt Co., Ill., Bk. pg. 106.
