Alice LOWDEN

Alice Lowden, (2) wife of William Hiatt, son of John and Margaret Hiatt.
He d. Testate by Mar 1767, Frederick CO., Va.  Thought to have died in North or South Carolina

** Alice Lowden (b. Abt. 1728, d. Aft. 1777)
Alice Lowden (daughter of Renier Lowden  and Easter Worthington  was born Abt. 1728 in Salem, Salem Co., New Jersey, and died Aft. 1777 in N or S Carolina. She married William Hiatt on July 1748 in HopeWell Mo Mtg., Frederick Co., Va., son of John Hiett and Mary Smith Notes for Alice Lowden: Alice Lowden married William Hiatt sometime in July of 1748. He had been previously married and had five children by a previous marriage. He died about 1767 in Frederick Co. Va. and she was remarried to John Thomas. They evidently married outside the Hopewell Mo Mtg of the Quakers and were disowned for marriage by a hireling teacher. Later they gave satisfaction for such an indiscretion and were granted a certificate to New Garden Mo Mtg. Guilford Co. N. Carolina. John Thomas died on Nov. 13, 1781. Although this particular Thomas family does not enter into our own geneological tree, the Thomas family was prominent in the early Quakers with branches in almost every Monthly Meeting that I have seen, and one branch at the Newton Meeting in Chester Co. Penn. was in our direct lineage. Sarah Thomas, the  daughter of Peter Thomas and Elizabeth (Goodwin) Thomas, was the mother of Christian Vore, our second male ancestor on this continent. The name appears in our family again as Martha Thomas, wife of Isaac Hiatt. As yet I have been unable to trace the exact lines of the Thomas family in our family. There are numerous geneological studies of other branches, some of which will probably interlink. More About Alice Lowden and William Hiatt: Marriage: July 1748, HopeWell Mo Mtg., Frederick Co., Va.. Children of Alice Lowden and William Hiatt are:

Dear Dave, thanks for taking time to write back. I would be so very  interested to see all that you do have. I may have some you may be very interested in too. BUT I don't have much at all on the Lowden side, have  never  really pushed it, but should and would like to, perhaps your contact will  encourage that, am sure there is a lot more then what I have. I don't have anything really past Reneir Lowder but do have a lot on the Esther  Worthington Side especially gong back several generations on some. I had tons of papers  and information published, court records, church, etc. but most of that has  become lost, not sure how much I still have or where I have it, binders  full. I do have quite a bit in my files. Where does Nancy Lowden come  in? I don't have anything on the siblings of Alice but following the Hiatt and associated families have thousands more to add, over 410,000 names and  working near full time on my file, My file is predominantly a working, master  file, most of what appears from my lines on any site is from my records with   people adding to or submitting my information as I have sent most my info  to hundreds of others too.
I have made up files on DVD's to send out, would love to see your other lines, I find it very rare to find others of the colonial families that do not  share a few or several other family lines too. I don't find the name of Kishlar, that is odd though, does it have other variations of spelling?
I would be happy to share what I have and hope to see what you have as  well.  I have several books, research, families stories, histories, etc. of  dozens of books on dozens of families as well as many I have reprinted,  scanned,  etc. for research purposes. One I am going to have finished this coming  week is Irish Quakers in Ireland and America 1690 thru 1740 published in  1790,  very fragile so have to type and will then try to photo it by camera to make PDF format too. Thanks, love to hear more from you on your data too. Sincerely, Larry Anderson Hi Larry You must be a full time professional genealogist. I am still pretty new at it. Anyway, I was looking for info on Nancy Lowden and came across a web site that you might be interested in. It is lowdenhistory.com It has a lot of info on the Lowden family, starting with William Lowden, son of Reiner.

Robert LOWDEN

No information but can assume that he would have been born in either VA or Penn.  I would guess that there would be ample records easily available for this line and probably many who have already proved up on this lineage.  I have gotten some inquiries so I am interested in gathering more info as time permits as I am more able to spend the time to do so. Isaac HIATT Sr.

THIRD GENERATION: CHILDREN OF WILLIAM HIATT

(38.)   ISAAC HIATT (4.)  (1.):

b. c1751, Frederick Co., Va. (now Jefferson Co., W. Va.) ; d. c1824, Guilford Co., NC.; m. c1773, prob. Guilford Co., NC., to MARTHA (?THOMAS?)., parentage unknown; b. 1750's,date and place not known; d. post 1825, in Indiana.

Isaac Hiatt and his brother John had a certificate, 1772, from Hopewell Mo. Mtg., Frederick Co., Va., to New Garden Mo. Mtg., Guilford Co., NC. (See p.97).  In 1777, he and his brothers, John and James, while residents of South Carolina, sell the land they had inherited from their father (see p. 97).

The 1790 Census of Guilford Co., NC., gives two Isaac Hiatts, which is probably a duplication, they each having 6 males and 6 females in the family.  Providing there were two Isaacs there in 1790, the second one must have removed elsewhere since a study of the records indicates but one Isaac in Guilford, and he the son of William and Alice (Lowden). Hiatt. (See p. 6).

Deep River Mo. Mtg., Guilford Co., NC.;
6-6mo-1808 - Martha Hiatt received on certificate from New Garden Mo. Mtg., dated 30-4mo-1808.

1-9mo-1825 - Martha Hiatt and dau. Rebecca granted certificate to White Water Mo. Mtg., Waine Co., Indiana. (R45).

As to Martha, wife of Isaac Hiatt, she may have been a Thomas, possibly daughter of the John Thomas who married 1770 to Alice (Lowden). Hiatt.  (See p. 54). John Talbert Hiatt of Moravia, Iowa, is absolutely certain that his grandfather, Lorenzo D. Hiatt - b. 1814 - (son of Enos and a grandson of Isaac and Martha ). -, was a second cousin to Talbert Hiatt - b. 1803 (son of Ezekiel and a grandson of John and Mary (Thomas). Hiatt). - who settled in Iowa near his grandfather.  John Talbert Hiatt says he was even named for this Talbert Hiatt.  According to all evidence, Lorenzo D. Hiatt was a third cousin, though the Hiatts, and not a second cousin.  Providing that Martha was a Thomas, and a niece of Mary (Thomas) Hiatt, Lorenzo D. and Talbert would still be third cousins through the Thomases, and it is not likely that this double relationship, if it existed, would be considered as second cousins rather than third.  There was a very close association in North Carolina between Isaac Hiatt and the family of John and Mary (Thomas). Hiatt, and John Talbert Hiatt (a desc. of Isaac). can cite relationship between his father and grandfather and the children and grandchildren of John and Mary (Thomas). Hiatt.  John and Mary did have a daughter Martha, born 17-7mo-1751, but Jesse M. Hiatt (R44). says she married to Moses Grigg (a statement which I have been unable to verify - editor).  If the wife of Isaac Hiatt was Martha Hiatt, daughter of John and Mary (Thomas). Hiatt, then John Talbert Hiatt's great-grandfather Enos Hiatt, would have been a first cousin (through his mother, Martha Hiatt). to Talbert Hiatt, a son of Martha's brother Ezekiel.  Thus, Lorenzo D. Hiatt would actually be a first cousin once removed to Talbert, but what was commonly called second cousins.  This is offered for what it may be worth.  It cannot be proven that Martha, daughter of John and Mary (Thomas). Hiatt did not marry Moses Grigg, or that she did marry his first cousin Isaac Hiatt.  (It is my opinion, however, that Isaac Hiatt did marry his first cousin Martha Hiatt - editor.)  (More on this problem will appear in the section devoted to a sketch of John Talbert Hiatt - editor.)

The list of children for Isaac and Martha Hiatt, as given on page 99, and the family records, etc. were complied by Jesse M. Hiatt (R44). over fifty years ago, no doubt from grandchildren or great-grandchildren of Isaac.  It all appears to be correct, for the most part, and will be discussed in detail further on in the volume.

Martha THOMAS

Martha's father may have been John Thomas who married Alice Lowden Hiatt
after William died, that would make her a step sister.

James HIETT

Birth date and place taken from LDS Genealogical Library IGI records.
                            Land Records

The last land sale that James Hiatt made is interesting in that he sold his land to Robert Clark for $500 on 8 Nov 1824.  Then Robert Clark sold the same land for $500 on 7 Feb. 1825 to William Hiett.  This was probably done to avoid a will probate as I feel that James Hiett died after 1825.  He does not appear on the 1830 census record unless he is the very old male living in the home of Peter Hitt.

South Carolina research on James Hiatt line.  James Hiatt was born circa 1753 in Frederick Co., Vir.  His parents were William and Alice Lowden Hiatt. William Hiatt's will was probated on 4 Mar 1767 in Winchester, Frederick Co., Vir.  He gave his planatation to his wife Alice and their three sons, John, Issac and James Hiatt.
On 1 January 1776 James Hiatt had asked the Hopewell Mo. Mtg., of Frederick Co., Va. for a certificate of transfer to join the New Garden Mo. Mtg. in Guilford N.C.  His certificate was approved but was never presented at New Garden.
On 14 Feb 1777 the three brothers sell their interest in the Virginia land to Jacob and Abraham Roads.  The deed stated that the brothers were yeomen living in the Province of South Carolina.  A county location was not given.  The two older brothers did not find S.C. to their liking, so they returned to N.C. to live.  John Hiatt went to Rowan County and Isaac went to Guilford Co., N.C. until his death.
James Hiatt's first recorded land purchase was made on 8 February 1787 in Greenville Co., S.C.  The 197 acres of land was located on the Zachariah's Fork, the Reedy Fork of the Reedy River, in the southern tip of the county.  John Alexander sold the land to James Hiatt for five pounds sterling and the rest upon demand of "one pepper corn".  The payment of a pepper corn and the small sum of money indicates a close tie between the Hiatt and Alexander families.  This land remained with the Hiatt family for over 60 years.
James Hiatt married Nancy in circa 1779.  The date and place for this marriage is not known.  However, I believe that James Hiatt may have married Nancy Alexander.  The Alexander families were early settlers of Spartanburg Co., S.C.  The father of Nancy may be James Alexander, Sr. who was born in Antrim, Ireland. He had three sons, John, James Jr., and Joseph.  The three sons fought in the Revolutionary War from Spartanburg Co.  For their war service they were given lands in Greenville County in Mar 1786.  This move was recorded in the Church minutes in the book "The History of Fairview Presbyterian Church" by Mary L. Garrett.  In 1787 the families of John, Joseph and James Alexander Sr., moved to the area.  It was at this time when James Hiatt's name first appears in  official records.  The Fairview Church is 3 miles east of the Fork Shoals Community.  Fork Shoals is located on the Reedy River and was an early location of the Fork Shoals Baptish Church organized in 1780.
The 1790 census listed the James Hiett family with 4 girls, 3 boys and one older male child into the family. The Greenville Co., census records are not reliable as the names are misspelled and the ages recorded are incorrect.  This has made it difficult to place the families in their proper groups.  On the 1830 census a Peter Hiett is listed.  I do not know who this Peter is, but living with him is a older man that might be James Hiatt.  The sons of James Hiatt are believed to be : Isaac, George, William, and Aaron and Henry.  I do not know the names of the girls.  Isaac Hiatt's name is mentioned only on land records.  He was not listed on a census record.
Nancy Hiatt was recorded on the 1820 census.  Her name was not mentioned on the deed records of the land sales made in 1823, 1824 and 1825.  So she may have died sometime after 1820.  I have not located a Bible record for James and Nancy Hiatt.  Through the years the spelling of the Hiatt name became Hiett in many of the South Carolina records.
A study of the last two deed records is very interesting. On 8 November 1824, James Hiett sells his land to Robert Clark for $500.  Then on 7 February 1825, Robert Clark sells this same land to William Hiett for $500.  This may have been done to avoid a will probate.  I do not know when James Hiett died, but he does not appear on the 1830 census record.  Note the mention of George Hiett in both records.  On 1824 record he is living on the plantation by 1825 record he is listed as "formerly" having lived on the land.
George Hiatt was born circa 1790/95.  He married Abigail Clark and they had seven sons and three daughters.  They moved to Marshall Co., KY in 1825 and settled near the village of Benton.
William Hiett was born in 1785 in South Carolina.  The name of the county where he was born in not known.  One researcher has given William the middle name of Henry but this has not been proven.  In the public records he is listed as William Hiett.  He married Nancy in circa 1806 in Greenville Co.,  No record of this marriage has been found.  I do not know Nancy's maiden name.  The Greenville Mountaineer Newspaper reported William's death date as 30th May 1842, in his 57th year.  He left a "disconsolate" widow and 15 children.  William had been an orderly member of the Baptist Church for twenty years.  His will was recorded for probate on 6 Jun 1842 in the Greenville Co., Court House in the city of Greenville, S.C.  The will names his wife Nancy and each of the 15 children.  They seem to be in order of their birth.  William's bible has not been located.  They were members of the Baptist Church for 20 years.
After William Hiett's death his children began to drift away to other sections of the country.

James Hiett:  It is certain that Catherine and William are children of James and Nancy Hiett.  If you read pg. 1-3 of Mc Kaughan Genealogy, sevearl pgs over, it shows a land deed where James Hiett sells 400 acres to Robert Clark on 8 Nov 1824, Then Robert Clark sells the same land to William Hiett in 1825.  Then James Hiett sells William Hiett 313 acres.  It mentions that George and Isaaclived on this land.  So, William, Aaron, George and Isaac are all sons of James and Nancy Hiet in all probability (Calvin B. Hiett)
Mary Hiett has been documented also as a daughter of James Hiett, CBH
(Larry, I have tried not to list anyone unless it can be documented!  I would appreciate anything that you have about James and Nancy Hiett. CBH

Hopewell Mo. Mtg. Frederick Co., Va.:
1st of 1st mo 1776 - Request was made in this Mtg. for a certificate for James Hiatt, in order to join the New Garden Mo. Mtg., North Carolina.  The Mtg. appoints Richard Ridgeway and James Starr to make necessary inquiry and produce a certificate.

1st of 1st mo. 1776 - The friends appointed to produce a certificate for James Hiatt, produced one which was approved. (R48).

He appears to have gone directly to South Carolina, for he did not present his certificate at New Garden, and in 1777, as a resident of South Carolina, along with his brothers John and Isaac, sold the land in Virginia he had inherited from his father (see p. 97).

James Hiatt is given on 1790 Census of South Carolina (see p. 6).

Nancy ALEXANDER

Sent by Valeska Vicars.   Received by mail, 14 Nov 2000 from Kathryn M. Little, 9638 Pleasant View LN, Charlotte, NC  28227-3409.

She notes in her report:  Family tradition tells that he was born in Edingburg, Scotland.  He settled in Greenville district, NC, so we're told, and had a plantation there.  I have been able to confirm some of this.  See Chpt. XIV, p. 458 "Traditions and Reminiscens of The American Revolution.  Very interesting article I've copied and filed in my HIETT papers, article says HITE, but they are certainly related.  See also "History of Greenville Co., pg. 35-43, also see Pickens Co., 06 June 1842, SC., Will probated in Greenville Co., SC.  Also see History of Rowen Co., NC.  This inforation was given me more then 35 years ago, I have since found that he was not born in Scotland.
More about Nancy, I suspect that her name was Nancy Jane Berry (Not Alexander?)
(It seems to me that this family is confused by one generation and that the information is from the children of William and Nancy, not of James and Nancy, may be the problem with the name of Berry vs. Alexander as well.  Larry Anderson)

George Whitefield POPE

S/o James Pope.  Sent by Ann S. Bernard.
The first account we have of Elder Pope as a preacher is found in the
oldest records extant of Abbotts Creek Chruch in 1783, when it seems that they were commencing a new book, where his name is entered as pastor.
About 1783, he purchased a farm midway between Thomasville and High Point
one mile north of the Southern Railway, on the Guilford side of the County Line.

(R68).

1-1-1776 Mary Pope (formerly Hiatt). was disowned by Hopewell Mo. Mtg., Frederick Co., Va., for joining the Baptists. (R34).

George Pope is given on 1790 Census of Guilford Co., NC., with 1 male over 16 years including Head of Family, 6 males under 16 years of age, and 2 females.

In 1975 George Pope purchases 272 acres in Guilford Co., NC., form Isaac Hiatt (see p. 98).

There were many Popes given on the 1790 Census of North Carolina, but the above George Pope was the only one listed for Guilford Co., NC. -ed.

Since George Hiatt is known to have married in 1762, and since the eldest child named in the above will was born in 1772, it is possible that there were four or five children born between 1762 and 1772 who are not named in the will.  These elder children, if there were any, would have been aged 17 to 25 in 1787, thus probably all married.  The six children that George names in his will were all minors, the eldest but 15 years of age.
