Notes

Samuel SHIELDS

Samuel Shields married and had two children. He later separated from his wife and was spoken of as "the only Shields known to prove unfaithful to his marriage vows." It is thought that he went to Illinois with Joseph Shields in 1836 or 1837.

Richard B. Groharing, after research in "Shields Family" by John Arthur Shields; "Shields Genealogy" by Mary O. Derrick Coleman, published by Fulton County (Indiana) Historical Society, Library of Congress No. 79-52664; 1820 Jennings County, Indiana Census by Steve Shields; "Genealogy of Samuel Shields, A Pioneer Settler in Edgar County, Illinois" by Howard L. Jones; and research by Wayne L. Shields of Parsons, Kansas, writes:

"In his book 'Shields Family,' 1917, John Arthur Shields commented, 'We know very little of Samuel. He separated from his first wife in Indiana and went to Illinois and later to Missouri, and he and his descendants, if he ever had any, have been lost to the rest of the family.' Shields placed Samuel as the second child of William and Margaret.

"Subsequent research has shown that he indeed moved from Jennings County, Indiana to Edgar County, Illinois, but prior to the time his daughter Elizabeth married there 6 December 1827. His youngest son, Jesse, was born in Edgar County, Illinois in 1828.  His wife Susannah is shown in both the 1840 and 1870 censuses of Edgar County.  At this point in time (1998), it seems that Coleman's damning indictment of him could be no more than a family myth, a half-truth at best; or an embellishment of John Arthur Shields' comment. Or perhaps a combination of all those things.  When both Coleman and Shields wrote, they didn't have the name of his wife or easy access to the census records.  An analysis of the 1820 Jennings County, Indiana census reveals much about Samuel's family at that time and confirms other independent research.

"In the 1920s, John A. Shields made more inquiries and concluded that Samuel had not left his family in Indiana but had moved them to Illinois.

"On the other hand, Samuel probably left his wife and family after the move to Illinois, as he doesn't appear in the subsequent census records. The 1830 census of Edgar County shows William Shields, not yet 20 years old, as the head of a family that apparently includes himself, his three brothers, his mother (Susannah) and two younger sisters. One of William's grand daughters stated that William had raised the family consisting of this brothers and sisters because his father (Samuel) ran away and was never heard from again."

William Jesse SHIELDS

William Jesse Shields and his wife, Sarah Ellen Shields, were distant cousins, he being descended from Richard Shields of the 10 Brothers and she from Robert of the 10 Brothers. The tombstone at Middle Creek Methodist Church Cemetery near Sevierville, Tennessee shows his name as Jesse W. and hers as Sarah E., but Dr. A. Randolph Shields reports he was William Jesse.

Sarah Catherine SHIELDS

Sarah's gravestone identifies her as "Sarah E. Shields, Wife of Jesse W. Shields." Dr. A. Randolph Shields refers to Sarah as Sarah Catherine and her husband as William Jesse.

Dr. Shields says that, with the marriage of William Henry Harrison Shields to Sarah's mother, Emily Ellen Adams Shields, Sarah became her mother's stepdaughter-in-law. William Henry Harrison Shields was second cousin, stepfather and father-in-law to Sarah.

William SHIELDS

William's children listed here by Hannah are as given in "The Shields Family History." The author of "Shields Genealogy" gives them as Mary, Jane or Janet, Mark, James and Samuel.

William and his second wife, Aria, moved to Bad Ax County (now Vernon County), Wisconsin in 1857. The "Shields Genealogy" lists their children as Hannah, Deliah, Jesse, Tipton, William, twins Amanda and Orvanda, Elva and Rebecca. Note that The Sun of Spring Valley, Wisconsin in an article 13 October 1938 identifies Nancy Ellen Shields as Amanda's twin, raising the theory that Orvanda and Nancy Ellen are the same person.

All of the above needs research.

The Sun reported that William and "Ary" Shields moved to Wisconsin in the spring of 1855 and says there were two sons and five daughters. The family made the move by ox-drawn covered wagon. They lived in Crawford County until about 1868, at which time they moved to Cady Creek and settledona farm a mile east of Bailey's Corners. The Sun says Amanda and David Reed married the day after Nancy Ellen and Isaiah Bailey.

According to the chronology of naming the sons, William must have been the second son of William and Margret, born in the fort in about 1792.  He was twice married, first to Hannah Toothman, whose children are given as: Mary, Janet or Jeanette, Mark, James and Samuel.  His second wife was Aria or Ariana Evans.  Her children are said to have been: Hannah, Deliah, Jesse, Tipton, William and twins Amanda and Ovanda who were born about 1845, one of which had one blue and one brown.  There was one, Rebecca, who was a cripple and lived to be 30 years of age.  Another daughter named Alva, born Dec. 25, 1835, married her cousin William Toothman.  Those names and dates may not be absolutely correct as we have been unable to get in touch with the descendants of William and Aria Evans Shields, to our deep regret.  William and Maria moved to Wisconsin and settled in Bad ax County (now Vernon County) in 1857.

Jesse SHIELDS

Jesse Shields was a merchant and an Indiana state legislator.

When his mother, Amanda Logan Shields, died and his father married a third wife, Jesse was taken to live with his half-sister, Nancy Agnes Elliott. When he was about nine years old, he and his brother Ezekiel were being taken from Madison to live with his mother's relatives in Washington County, Indiana. He slipped through a hole in the cover of the prairie schooner, went to New Albany, Indiana and shifted for himself.

At Rochester, Indiana, he became a wealthy merchant and was a director of several companies. He became known as "the poor man's friend" because, during the Civil War, he maintained prewar prices on an enormous stock of goods he had stored in anticipation of war.

In his will, written 22 July 1897 and proved 5 November 1900, he asked to be buried in the "old cemetery west of Rochester." He named his wife, Margaret, Jesse L. and Harry Shields, sons of William J. Shields, Fredrick Shields Kochenderfer, son of his daughter, Clio M. Kochenderfer, and Alfred M. Shields, his son, to whom he left property at Lawrence Minnesota. Alfred died soon after the will was written.

Jesse Shields, the oldest son of William and Amanda, was born at Madison, Ind., Sept. 20, 1820.  When a lad of 9 years, on the death of his parents, the children were taken to live with the mother’s relatives in Washington Co., Ind.  On the way, he escaped from the covered wagon and ran away, going to his half sister’s, Nancy Shields Elliott, going with them and other relatives into northern Indiana.  He grew up in the vicinity of Rochester and married Catherine Welton, who died with her babe in 1845.  Later he married Margaret Robbins.  There were five children.
Jesse Shields was well known in Futon County and highly respected.  He was a leading merchant in Rochester, also had large interests in land and stock.  He was a member of the legislature several terms and director of important interests in the community.  He was known during the Civil War as the poor man’s friend.
After Margaret Robbins death he married Margaret McClung in 1870, which survived him some ten years or more, there were no children.
The following are the children of Margaret Robbins and Jesse Shields: William Jay Shields, born 1852, was married to Frances Killen, they lived at Rochester, there were two children: Leroy and Harry K. Shields who married Mary Hurst, they reside at San Jose Ranch, Glendora, Calif.  Their three children are: Louis, born 1908; James Shields, born 1910; Margaret, born 1915.  James is a very fine student and minister in the Adventist Church.  Harry K. Shields was a fine musician and singer over the radio and was employed in evangelistic work.  His remains are buried at Glendora, Cal.
