Isaiah BAILEY

Isaiah Bailey settled on a claim near Spring Valley, Wisconsin and met Nancy Ellen Shields. When he went to Hudson, Wisconsin to file his claim, the filing was denied because he was not yet 21, nor was he a head of family. He returned home and took Nancy Ellen Shields before a justice of the peace at Hatchville, Wisconsin to be married. The justice of the peace was licensed to perform marriages in Pierce County, and Isaiah and Nancy Ellen lived in St. Croix County. So, they all stood in a roadway with the JP in Pierce County and the bride and groom in St. Croix. With the marriage performed, Isaiah went back to Hudson by horseback and, as a head of family, filed his claim. The Baileys lived on that land more than 60 years.

Nathan SHIELDS

[v28t2460.FTW]

There is no date or place of death for Nathan because in the fall of 1827 or 1828, Nathan and three or four other men started down the Ohio River from Harrison County, IN with a flatboat-load of produce bound for New Orleans.  They were never heard from again, but it has been written that they were lost on the Mississippi River on their way back home.  This information came from Oliver Shields' father, Milton Shields.

Information from letter to Walter Davidson from Ila and Oliver Shields of Veneta, OR (1 May 1983).
