                     From the Nelson Gazette
                    May 28, 1908 (Nelson, Neb.)

Elijah Hiatt was born in Hamilton Co., Ill 18 July 1829, and died at his home in Nelson, Nebraska May 25, 1908 age 78 years, 10 mos, and 7 days.
He became acquainted with sorrow quite early in life having lost his 1st and 2nd companions.
The first leaving a son and the 2nd a daughter, both are still living.
John resides in Colorado and Eveline in Kansas.  He was united in marriage with his now sorrowing widow on 26 July 1857 and to them were born 9 children, 6 sons and 3 daughters.  Seven of this family have preceded their father in death.  Two sons, Charlie of So. Omaha, and C.A. of Nelson were left, thus 3 sons and 1 daughter remain to mourn the loss of their father, also 9 grandchildren and 3 great Grandchildren.
Brother Hiatt was converted, baptized and united with the Baptist church in April 1877.
We trust he has gone to join the church in Glory.  We shall long remeber his faithfulness to his afflicted.
The funeral service was held at the home Tues.  conducted by the writer assisted by Rev. Knauer of the Presb. church Brethen church.  Many flowers were brought as expression of love and sympathy.
The body was tenderly laid to rest in the Nelson Cemetery to wait the morning of the resurrection.

Letter addressed to Helen V. Ferguson
Evergreen Acre Rt.1
Dallas, Pa. 18612

Dear Mrs. Ferguson,

Elijah Hiatt's name appears in the earliest Madison County history (1879) as
a farmer living near St. Charles.  Names of family not included.  There are no Hiatts listed in Fremont county Histories or McCluskeys.
Both Hiatts and McCluskeys appear in the cemetery records of Fremont County, Iowa.  We do not find the specific name of Elijah Hiatt in the volume but this does not necessarily mean that an Elijah Hiatt was not buried in that county.
Since there is no biographical information, the census records should be somewaht helpful in discovering the household in which Claborn Alexander Hiatt lived as a child.  Try for the 1870 census in Fremont Co., and ask for the household in which Claborn Alexander Hiatt's name appears.  The child should be two years old at the time.
In a limited index of earliest marriages in Fremont County, Iowa copied by D.A.R. and compiled 1926 the marriage of an Elijah Hiatt to a Margarette Ann Burt is dated 1 Oct 1854.  We show John Hiatt and a Martha Ann McCluskey who were married 13 May 1853.
We are sorry that we are unable to continue with the search.  Our staff is small and we only find it possible to check indexes of county histories and such grave records and limited marriage indexes as we have available.
Finding your father is his parents' household with names of the other children shoud be a start.
Sincerely Yours, Iowa Historical Lib.
