Dear Mrs. Ferguson,

Elijah Hiatt's name appears in the earliest Madison County history (1879) as
a farmer living near St. Charles.  Names of family not included.  There are no Hiatts listed in Fremont county Histories or McCluskeys.
Both Hiatts and McCluskeys appear in the cemetery records of Fremont County, Iowa.  We do not find the specific name of Elijah Hiatt in the volume but this does not necessarily mean that an Elijah Hiatt was not buried in that county.
Since there is no biographical information, the census records should be somewaht helpful in discovering the household in which Claborn Alexander Hiatt lived as a child.  Try for the 1870 census in Fremont Co., and ask for the household in which Claborn Alexander Hiatt's name appears.  The child should be two years old at the time.
In a limited index of earliest marriages in Fremont County, Iowa copied by D.A.R. and compiled 1926 the marriage of an Elijah Hiatt to a Margarette Ann Burt is dated 1 Oct 1854.  We show John Hiatt and a Martha Ann McCluskey who were married 13 May 1853.
We are sorry that we are unable to continue with the search.  Our staff is small and we only find it possible to check indexes of county histories and such grave records and limited marriage indexes as we have available.
Finding your father is his parents' household with names of the other children shoud be a start.
Sincerely Yours, Iowa Historical Lib.

For years grandma has been patiently waiting for the summons to go home and be with her companion and children, and best of all her, Savior.  Gradually the tenement of clay weakened; the soul began prepartation for the final journey and Oct 16, 1913, the Father higher and so a long life has come to its close on earth, but is gone to inhabit the realms of immortality.

sorrow and separation.

daughter, Mrs. C.H. Graham, two miles southwest of Sidney, of pneumonia fever,
March 9, at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 7 days.
Sarah Estes, daughter of Mr.a dn Mrs. Joel Estes, was born near Savannah,
Mo.  In the spring of 1859 she went west with her parents.  When they arrived
at Denver there were only a few little log huts near where the city now stands.
On October 125 of the same year her father, Joel Estes, a noted poineer and
pathfinder, discoved Estes Park, which is now one of Colorado's most beautiful
health and pleasure resorts.  The deceased was the first white woman to set
foot in this now famous park.  They returned to Missouri in 1861, and in 1862
moved to the Estes Park and there lived among that beautiful scenery for three
years.
She was married to W.K. Hiatt of Sidney, August 16, 1866, in this county at
the home of Mrs. Joe Hiatt, the latter being a sister of deceased.  They moved
to a farm four miles north of Sidney, and now owned by Mr. Sells.  In 1869 they
moved to the old home two miles west of Mt. Zion church where she resided five
years after the death of her husband March 14, 1902.  To this union were born
five children, namely, N.J. Hiatt, Hamburg; O.H. Hiatt, Waterloo, Neb.; Mrs.
S.G. Penn and Mrs. J.R. Woolsey, Germania, Wyoming, Mrs. C.H. Graham, Sidney.

at Walnut Grove and was a faithful member until the church disbanded about the
year 1885.  In 1896 she united with the UNITED Brethern Church at Cherry grove,
of which she was a member at her death.
The deceased was a kind and noble hearted woman.  She always gave a helping
hand to the sick and needy, never making any show of her religion but lived so
that all those around her knew she had been to Christ and learned of Him.
A short service was held at the home at which the Presbyterian choir
rendered the favorite hymn of the deceased, "Lord, I'm Coming Home."
The regular funeral services were held from the Mt. Zion church conducted by
Rev. C.A. Marshall of Hamburg assisted by Rev. Cramer and Rev. Worcester in the
presence of a crowded house of friends, neighbors and relatives who met there
to pay their last respect to the one they love so dearly.
The deceased leaves to mourn her loss, beside her family, three brothers,
and one sister, namely, Mrs. Mary Ruffner, Denver, Colo; Milton Estes of Texas;
Joel Estes of Colo; Hon. F.M. Estes, formerly of this county but now of Cement,

Lucy Jane SKEEN

Sent by Leland Smith of Tabor, Iowa.  Also found in the Fremont Co. Cem.
book pg. 38, wife of Rev. James L. Hiatt.
The Funeral services of Sister James Hiatt, wife of Bro. James Hiatt, were held at the Mt Zion church last Friday, Dec 29, conducted by Elder Hanley.  Sister Hiatt died at her home near Nemaha City, Neb., after a protracted illness of several weeks, on the morning of Dec 27.
Her remains were brought to the Mt. Zion cemtery for interement besides her son Charles, who died about two years ago.
Bro. and Sister Hiatt formely lived in the Mt. ZIon neighborhood where they have a large number of relatives and friends.
Sister Hiatt was an exceptional Christian woman; one who had  the esteem and respect without exception of all who knew her.
The attenddance at her funeral was very large.  Elders Orr, McCracken and
the writer took part in the funeral services.  The text from which Elder Hanley preached was Rev. 22:14, "Blessed are they that do his commandements, that they may have right to the tree of life, and many enter in through the ---- into the city."

Nancy Jane HIATT

Concerining and article we included in the Jan. 1988 Newsletter
Sunday Work Herold, Omaha, Neb.  Jan 10, 1988

Note by Leland Smith of Tabor, Iowa:  The Mrs. Stuart mentioned on pg. 4 of
this article at the bottom of column 2, was Sabria Caliborne Birby's
grandmother, Nancy Jane Hiatt, d/o Little Page Hiatt, who married Henry Stuart.
I have heard for years that Sabria's grandmother died in the Blizzard of
1888", and here it is in 'black and white'.
In conversation with Sabria's son James I called this article to his
attention Sunday.  Yesterday he told me that Nancy Jane had gone out in search
of her husband, who was tending the livestock.  When the blizzard struck
suddenly, Henry and his lettle dog took refuge in a hay stack and were saved
from the blizzard.  Nancy Jane was only a few feet from the house when frozen
to death.
                         BLIZZARD STORY
....The Blizzard of '88 had characteristics that made it extraordinary.
Some attributed it to more than an act of nature, feeling that it had unearthly
and divine implications.  The light rain and pleasant weather that preceeded
the storm, set the stage for tragedy as the rain turned to sleet and snow.
In the Holt Co. (Nebraska) as Mrs. Stuart in search for her husband froze
to death as she stood grasping the fence.
   O. W. Coursey of Huron, Dakata Territory watched the storm as it approached
the Neb. boarder:  "We looked up and saw something rolling towards us with
great furry from the N.W. and making a loud noise.  It looked like a long
string of bails of cotton, each one bound tightly with heavy cords of silver,
and then all tied together with great silvery ropes.  The broad front of these
cotton bales looked to be about 25 feet high, above them it was perfectly
clear.  The phenomenon was so unusual that it scared us children".
Jack Sullivan described the storm as it approached O'Neill: "I looked
towards the west and there at the horizan was a whirling grey blur, rolling
towards me with roar and speed of an express train.  As it advanced closer, it
seemed to be preceeded by a snapping and crackling sound like static
electricity.  I was fanscinated by the furry of it and stood motionless until
it struck me." ....Etc.  see newsarticles in the above mentioned Hiatt family
newsletters published by Larry and Tanya Anderson.

He had a little dog with him and crawled into a hay stack and that is what
kept him from freezing.
