Note from Wilma L. Ephland.  Boys were all in teens when dad married Sarah Liza Renfro who was 17 yrs and he was 40 years old.  She worked for him when his first wife was sick.  They lived in Decab County close to St. Joseph
Mo.  Don't know how he got her to work for him or the contact.  Sarah had a brother and sister, Marion Renfro and Amanda Renfro Owens.  Aunt Flore Galey was a half sister of hers.  She and Uncle Jo Galey raised five children, Cora, John, Charlie, Rosie, and Marie.  There was another older sister, Clora died.

William Howland PICKENS

William H. Pickens came to Brighton, Wash. Co. Iowa around 1853, according
to data in Danial Pickens diary.  Danial first came to Iowa in 1852 when he
laid claim to land there and returned to N.Y. to assist the rest of the family in moving there.  Several of the children of William H. Pickens settled in the Brighton, Keokuk, Iowa area and at least 3 fought in the civil war from Iowa.
Mrs. Carl, Ruth, Coffman, of Sidney, Iowa wrote, in her letter of 16 Jan
1989, that William came to Washington, Iowa from Collins, N.Y. and died in
Iowa. She furter states that William was born in N.Y. but that his sister was
born in Pennsylvania.  This, she notes, was information taken from census
records.
The 1850 Census of Collins, Erie Co., N.Y. gives the name of Howland
Pickens, age 50.

   Children:
      Clarrisa 16 F born N.Y.
      Adelia   12 F      N.Y.
      Priscilla 8 F      Penn.
      William   2 M      N.Y.

In the 1855 Census it lists William H. Pickens with 3 of his children, he
has lived in Collins, N.Y. for 12 years.
In 1856 he is found in the Washington Co, Iowa special census with  Polly
D. Pickens b. 1838 in Erie Co., N.Y., Priscilla Pickens b. 1842, Penn., William H. Pickens Jr. age 11?

                   1860 Census, Washington Co., Iowa
William H. Pickens born 1848, age 11.  He is living in the home of Daniel
Pickens and Jeanette Eddy.

1885  Census of Washington Co., Iowa Vol. 1273, line 427
                      Marion Township, Washington Co.

William H. Pickens, age 37, in the home of Orange S. Pickens.
Orange S. Pickens stated that his father lived in Penn. for two years and
that his mother died when he was very young.
There is some confusion as dates and names of some of these children.

In the 1860 Census of Brighton, Washington Co., Ia.  there is a family
living between O.S. Pickens and Ezekiel Eddy:

   Presler,  Francis    age  30  Farmer  b.  N.Y.
             Louisa          30              N.Y.
             Lucius L.        6  M.          N.Y.
             Loanda           6  F.          N.Y.
             Orange           4  M.          N.Y.
Presler,  Merch Mother age 74 Domestic b. R.I.

Flora A. SMITH

The place of death and burial are assumed to be in Brighton, Iowa as the date given for her death coincides with the period of time that they were living in that county.  The family had moved to Brighton area shortly after Daniel Pickens had made a claim on the land in 1852, where after he returned to N.Y. to assist the families to move there.  They used the system of riverboats to travel, as that was the most comfortable and quickest way of the times.

There has been some confusion as to the wife of Daniel Pickens, with some claims that there was a Mary Jane Smith as mother, however, this is not the case. Daniel Pickens married as a second wife a Mary Jane, whose mother was Martha Smith. Somehow these Mary Jane, Martha Smith and Flora A. were confused by later generations who confused the names. It is clear both in the will of Daniel and of his brother Orange S. that their mother was Flora A.

A note from Mary Pickens states that a record of some age, 1855, says that William H. Pickens age 57 from Mass. is widowed, a farmer, with dependants, Polly D., age 17 born in Erie, William H. age 7 born in Penn.  Another note says that William H. had birth defects and his mother died at his birth, 1848. If that is the case, she would have died in Buffalo, Erie Co., N.Y. before Daniel and his father made the trip to Iowa.

Herbert PICKENS

I have nothing further on Herbert at this time.  June 1992, LA

William Herbert PICKENS

Mother died at his birth.  He had a birth defect and died at Polly Dyes
home.  William Herbert Pickens, late of town of Persia, Iowa, died Feb. 4,
1883, probate of Will.  No widow, heirs:  Polly Dye, Orange Pickens, Washington Co., Iowa; Daniel Pickens of Sidney (Fremont), Iowa, and Polly D., a Cousin.
In Washington Co., Iowa 1856 special census, he is given as 11 years old.
That would make him born in 1845.

Lucy Jeannette EDDY

Married to Stephen R. Streeter and went to Minn. after the civil war.  He apparently died there, she then moved to Atlantic, Cass Co., Iowa where she had several land transacitons and left quite abundant records.  She married a Henry, with whom she did not remain for long, either separated or he died.  See the records of Lucy Janette Eddy, in the Pickens-Eddy supplement compiled by Mary Pickens of Indianapolis, and compiled by ourselves.  There was no stone for her when we found her grave in the Atlantic Cem.  She died of Cancer.  She used the name of Eddy after the death of Stephen Streeter, and after D. W. Henry.

A will of Alvin S. Eddy was left with my Grandmother, Goldie Teeter Hiatt which I now have the copy. Dated 9th day of May 1911 at a Surrogate's Court in and for the cou. of Erie, State of NY in the city of Buffalo.

And any  and all other persons who are or claim to be heirs at law and next of kin of this decedent, being descendants of any deceased brother or sister, if any there be.

Oct. of 1989 I called an Eddy fellow listed in the Phone directory living in Col.  He informed me of an Eddy Family Organization in Mass. and the names of a couple individuals, I in turn called them and came in contact with the Eddy Family Association.  I contributed a membership fee and purchased a 1930 reprint of the Eddy Family in America and also a book, Eddyville, Middleboro, Mass. 1661 - 1987 and a copy of the coat of arms.
I also was interested in what had happenened to my Grandmother and Grandfather Eddy, parents of Lucy Janet Eddy who had gone to Oregon in 1863.  I asked only for two names and numbers of Eddys in that area and called them, the one fellow, William Perry Eddy, was a grandson or great grandson of Lucy`s brother, Isreal Fisk Eddy and he told me that indeed the families were there, and buried in Cornwallis, Ore.  I will intend to have a good amount of information from the cousin.
Through the Eddy book, 1930 copy, I have been able to identify more correctly the generations of ancestors from Lucy back.

Census 18 June 1880 Atlantic, Cass Co., Iowa
Eddy, Lucy J.  age 37  widow, Keeping House  born Vt. Father Vt. Mother Vt.
Lura E.       14                             Iowa       Ill.       Vt.
Eddie E.     10                             Minn.      Ill.       Vt.

It appears that Lucy preferred her maiden name to all else, she refers to herself and children as Eddy instead of going by Streeter.  Later remarries and apparently separates as she is again found by the Eddy name.

My Grandmother, Goldie Teeter Hiatt had a probate record of Alvin S. Eddy which I now have. Dated 9th day of May 1911 at a Surrogate's Court in and for the County of Erie, State of NY in the city of Buffalo.

July of 1989 our family, along with my mother, Ruby Hiatt Anderson, went to Atlantic to see if we could find this evasive grandmother.  From the Diary of Daniel Pickens and William Ambrose, we knew that she was last known to be
there, in the late 1890's.
When first starting at the court house, we drew a blank looking for Lucy Streeter.  I was afraid that we had the wrong place, or that she may have remarried and we would never find her.  Than we looked in the land records, as we did, I kept coming up with a L. J. Eddy.  We finally figured out that Lucy and taken back the Eddy name and used that in all her dealings.  She was also using the Streeter name on a few of the documents.  There were many land transactions and we were able to find much of assistance, to include her daughter, Mary Pickens, married to Bird, and then Eastman.  We need to spend more time in that area to try and locate, perhaps, descendents of the Eastman families.
We also found a marriage records for Lucy J. Eddy, but it was somewhat confusing, as she gave her age as 37.  That was on the 11 of Sept. 1883.  She does not appear to stay with this new husband for some reason, perhaps because he must have figured out that she was actually about 50 years, he was 35.
Register of Marriages, Cass County, Iowa
License #448, Aug 8, 1883  To D. W. Henry of Atlantic, Iowa, a Barber.  He was born in Ill., son of A. Henry and Rachel Jones.  This was his second marriage.
Lucy J. Eddy, of Atlantic, Iowa, gives her age as 37, born in Vermont.  Her father as E. Eddy and mother as L. A. Fisk, and as her second marriage also.  (She seems to have forgotten Daniel, and her age, Ha.)  They were married at Maine, Iowa Aug. 8, 1883 by B.F. Peerman?  The date of return and register was 11 Sep 1883.

Register of Death, Cass County, Iowa
#1095 Dated 4 Sep 1896  Lucy Eddy, Female, White, age 65 years, housewife, died July 25, 1896.  She was listed as a widow, born in Vermont.  Died in Atlantic, Cass Co.,Iowa, of cancer.  Duration of and cause, 6 months, of cancer.  Buried 26 July 1896, at Atlantic Cem.  Physician J.M. Emmer, M.D., ect.
We looked throughout the cemetery for her but were not able to find her, we were able to find the caretaker of the Cem. who came out and went through the books and located her, she has no stone over her grave.  She is buried in lot 247, near the East end of the cemetery, close to the center.
There were other Eddy's buried there, but do not know at this time who they are.  A Nellie died 7 Feb 1915, N.W. and Minnie Eddy.
We also were able to find a Will, and a great deal of court records on her before we left.

The following are the assets of the Estate so far as they have come my knowledge; ---- Lot 4, blk 6, Atlantic, Iowa  The administrator obtained an order to sell this property.  It is worth between $50 and $75.
Your administrator holds a note against S. E. Streeter for $500 dated Mar 26th 1897 and due 1 Oct 1897, payable to myself as administrator of the Estateof L. J. Eddy, Deceased, drawing 8% from date.  This note is secured by
mortagage upon lots 23, 24, block 6, Atlantic, Iowa with this provision in the Mortgage:
"It is understood that this is given to secure the debts and costs in the estate of L.J. Eddy, Deceased, and when the debts and costs of said estate are paid, then this mortgage to be void, otherwise to remain in full force."
That your administrator has not commenced suit to foreclose this mortgage for the reason that all the claims of the estate had not been established.
That there is not much prospect yet of selling lot 4, blk. 6, Atlantic, Iowa.
ALL OF WHICH IS RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED     (Signed) E. M. Willard
                                                       Administrator

Lot 4, block 6 was sold for $75.00, 13 Jan 1889 to John Davis at sale.
Lot 21 block 5 was sold for $75.00, 6 Mar 1889 to Henry Martin at sale.

The estate was settled Aug 1898, with all her assests being sold or taken with none left for her children.  However, it seems that before she died, she did give out her property and real estate to her children, knowing that the costs and claims of the estate would take it before her children would have theirs.

Sept term, 1897, a brief was filed by L.L. DeLano, which in short gives the presence of Stephen E. Streeter during April and May 1897 was " That the Said S.E. Streeter was at the time living in Blair, Neb. but was here temporarily during the last sickness and death of his mother and remained here until about June 1, 1897, when he went to his home in Blair, Neb. and has at some time since June 1, 1897 removed to Sauk City, Wis. where he is now living; that before the said S.E. Streeter returned to Blair, Neb. about the 1st of June, he knew of the fact that the claim of T.S Lewis" --- etc. concerning knowledge of claims against his mothers estate.  A letter was forwarded to him, his wife received the letter and gave it to attorneys.  Letters that were sent him in Sauk City, Wis. were received by him 24th and 25th day of Sept. 1897, his wife living in Blair, Neb.  There is contained in this document, several pages of claims and denials of claims for the estate.  This dated 4 Oct 1897.
There is further information that will be given under Stephen Streeter.
The spouse of Mary J. Pickens is found to be Delbert A. Eastman.
Stephen E. Streeter was again single by 11 Jan 1899.
Lura E. Streeter husband was given as J. M. Whitman
Lucy J. Eddy appointed her son, Stephen Streeter to be the administrator of her will, 25 July 1896, but according to documentation of her probate records, he asked J. F. Conway to settle the estate in his stead.
There is also a complaint to the court that Stephen Streeter wrongfully took a horse and carriage that should have belonged to the estate of his mother and concealed it from the court.  It seems to me through these records
that his mother presented him with her horse and carriage as he was taking care of her just before she died.  Apparently from greed of some of the claimants, who appear to have tried to claim unjustly for her estate, someone wanted the horse and carriage sold to add to the estate.
Upon her last visit to her son, William Ambrose Pickens, she presented him with a gold watch and chain.  He mentions this in his writings.  Lucy apparently went to see her Pickens children before she became to ill to travel, and gave them each some momento.

Dewitt Clinton"Clint" HENRY

It is really exciting to hear from you. I think genealogy is so hard because the old records were hand written, hard to read and so many of them are not even accurate. I know that Dewitt Clinton (Clint) Henry lived in Marne, not Maine, Iowa. It is a small town close to Atlantic. I just came back from a trip to Atlantic where I go once in awhile to see what I can find. There are so many cemeteries and so far I can not find Lucy or Clint in any of them. I hope to be going again this summer or at least when the weather is better. I live in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa (Henry co.) in the extreme Southeast of the state. The library in Mt. Pleasant has loads of stuff on Henry Co. but not the other counties. I am going to see it the neighboring town of Burlington has a bigger library. I am going to have to diagram what you sent so I have something to go on when I find a good library. I may have to go to Navoo which is only 53 miles from here. We are getting ready to go to a super bowl party but tomorrow I will go through my stuff and send what I have on the Henrys. Most of them ended up in Minnesota. I was thinking that I would send out letters to all the Henrys who live in Norman and Clay Co., Minnesota, and see if they are descendants of my line of Henry or if they have any photos. The Henry family was a very good family and they all seemed to stick together other than with Clint. It is sad but also very funny that Clint married a 50 yr. old thinking she was 37. When you get into genealogy, you never know what you will find. I found a murder in my grandmother's Dilts family and I found some of my father's aunts (more Dilts) ran brothels in Des Moines. No wonder my father never told me a thing! My father never told me about his father or siblings. My father was angry because his mother threw his father out for not making enough money. My father didn't see his father for years and years. After my father died, I found some Henry names on a piece of paper in his drawer. When I researched it, I found that my father had 3 sisters and 2 brothers. I sent out letters to Henry families all over the middle part of the USA and finally found one brother who told me about the others. I made one good friend in New Orleans who was from the French Henry family but he wanted to help me research after he got his letter. We have become very good friends and he even came for a visit a few years ago. My husband and I really love him and have kept him as a good friend ever since. So many of the Henrys and their close relatives (Robinson, Furman) lived in Oregon. Most of my family lives there so I have spent a lot of time researching there but I never came up with anything. I am sort of at a dead end. I will send things tomorrow about Henrys. Glad to hear from you, Dawn

Dewitt Clinton Henry married Lucy J. Eddy on 8 August 1883 at Marne, Cass Co., Iowa. Lucy was born in Vermont @ 1846. She is listed as a widow but has kids named Lusa E. Eddy and Eddie E. Eddy. Her parents were E. Eddy and L. A. Fish. It sounds like she is using her maiden name for herself and her kids. Dewitt Clinton Henry, her second husband, had been living in Clarksville, Merrick Co., Nebr. where he was married to Mary Jane Furman with whom he had one child, Judson Dewitt Henry, born 1879. They must have divorced and gone on to marry again. Does anyone know what happened to D. C. Henry and Lucy J. Eddy? Where did they go?

My reply: The thing that makes it so hard to trace people is that they named their kids after themselves. It looks like Lucy J. Eddy who married Stephen E. Streeter was the daughter of the Lucy Eddy who married Dewitt Clinton Henry. Do you have any photos of any of these people? I have always wanted a photo of Dewitt because he is my great grandfather and no one knows much about him.
Dewitt Clinton Henry (He went by the name: Clint) (he is listed as D. W. Henry in a few places and that threw me off)
family records (handwritten by family) say he was born in Illinois on April 8, 1849 but he is listed as being born in 1849 and 1850 in on line records.
his parents, Abraham Henry and Rachel Jones (they came from Pennsylvania to Kane Co., Ill. to Jackson Co, Iowa to Clay Co. Minnesota)
Married Mary Jane Furman married on 16 Sept 1871 in Jackson Co. Iowa
1800 Census has them in Clarksville, Merrick Co., Nebraska
one child, Judson Dewitt Henry, born 26 Aug 1879, Nebraska
moved to Cass Co., Iowa
Divorced Mary Jane Furman @ 1883 probably in Cass Co., Iowa
Married 2nd wife, Lucy J. Eddy on 8 Aug 1883 (born in Vermont to Ezekiel Eddy and L. A. Fish in 1846
She had children: Lusa E. Eddy, b. 1866,Iowa (on line records show her as Lucy J. Eddy)
Eddie E. Eddy b. 1870 in Illinois
(I don't know why the kids have her maiden name. Who fathered the kids?)
she married Dewitt Henry on 8 Aug 1883 in Marne, Cass Co. Iowa
I have been trying to find out if she and Dewitt clinton Henry had any children. I can not find a thing about them.
What I want to know is: Where and when did Dewitt Clinton Henry die and where is he buried. In 1895 he was in Marne, Cass Co. Iowa working as a barber.
The rest of Dewitt's family was in Clay and Norman co., Minnesota but I have never found him there. One brother was in Benningham, Kansas but I have never found him there.
I think he died in Cass Co. and where did Lucy Eddy go? Do you know anything at all? Dawn Wheat

Oct. of 1989 I called an Eddy fellow listed in the Phone directory living in Col.

We also were able to find a Will, and a great deal of court records on her before we left.

mortagage upon lots 23, 24, block 6, Atlantic, Iowa with this provision in the Mortgage:
"It is understood that this is given to secure the debts and costs in the estate of L.J. Eddy, Deceased, and when the debts and costs of said estate are paid, then this mortgage to be void, otherwise to remain in full force."
That your administrator has not commenced suit to foreclose this mortgage for the reason that all the claims of the estate had not been established.
That there is not much prospect yet of selling lot 4, blk. 6, Atlantic, Iowa.

However, it seems that before she died, she did give out her property and real estate to her children, knowing that the costs and claims of the estate would take it before her children would have theirs.

                                         dated 21 Dec 1898

In April term, 1899, a final report of the Estate of L. J. Eddy, Deceased was made.  Total sales and assests came to $724.08 and total claims came to exactly $724.08

See page 235 of the Eddy Family History, 1930. Ezekiel was made Freeman in Sept., 1820, at Clarendon and in 1823 he was hog-hayward. His name appears in land transactions and as witness on deeds.

I was able to visit the family of Samuel and cousin William Eddy in Eddyville, Corvallis, OR and spend a couple days there with my sons Jacob William Osten Anderson and Larry Daniel Benjamin Anderson. I had discovered William a few years before by calling information on Eddy name and asked for any names of Eddy, the operator found only 2 names for me and the name of a William Eddy in Eddyville, sounded interesting and I called William discovering he was a grandson of the Ezekiel I was looking for, was so excited and we shared and kept in touch until i was able to visit him summer of 2005. He in turn introduced me to his cousin, Samuel Eddy who was still living in the home of Ezekiel and Mary Fisk Eddy homestead in Eddyville, OR. They had both been in the marines during WWII, quite a story, needed to get so much more. Samuel showed us the graves of Ezekiel and Mary behind the house, buried on a high point on the hill behind the house, fenced area that Samuel was applying for a government protection of the site as a historical grave yard, had a few others there with them.

William then took us around the town of Eddyville named of course for the family, and to other grave yards in the area, wish I had a recorder at the time, impossible to remember all his stories. We met others while visiting the cemetery that actually were related thru some of the families too. There were lots of records, letters and bible records, that they had, was allowed to copy some to give some hints on more information of extending families. William gave me a very rusted pair of glasses that he said his grandfather made for grandma Mary Eddy, he was an optometrist of the day.
Betweenn William and Samuel, they had several items from Ezekiel and Mary, including the walking cane that Ezekiel used to walk from Iowa to Oregon, had a cap on the bottom tip of an old gun cartridge to keep it from wearing off so badly.

Dear Stephanie:
Thanks for the response, am interested in many areas of the Eddy family, I had submitted a large amount of our combined families back about 1992-1994 period of time, then lost track of people and events going on there. Will have to provide a direct line of my families, have found quite a lot on them over the years, but so much more and looking for off spring of a "Half - uncle and aunt" at least. I remember some stories when I was young when some of the family said they remembered seeing these cousins at some point, but dates back to very early 1900 at least or even later 1800's. I have kept records and research on my mothers side especially, the Hiatt name all across the country, have a data base of abt 393 thousand, keep as much as possible on all lines, cousins, etc. and worked the past near 40 years on this project. At the time I was working with your Eddy Family Organization, there was no information on her family by Daniel Pickens, I had submitted a LOT of information on all that family and more recent generations to present times. HA, of course over the past 20 years have added a lot more kids, including my own, etc.
In starts, my grandfather is Fred Hiatt, married Goldie Mae Teeter, Fred is the son of Moses Hiatt and Ida Ann Pickens, she in turn, is the daughter of Daniel Pickens and Lucy Jeanette Eddy, Lucy is the daughter of Ezekiel Eddy and Mary Fisk, Ezekiel the son of Cpt. James Eddy and Mary Salsbury. From there I know you have the rest, believe we began loosing information on our families from Lucy Jeanette Eddy who had married Daniel Pickens, secondly married Steven Eddy and had 2 children, Steven Jr. and Laura Eddy who had married John Whitman, I completely loose all information from her onward. She had moved back east is all I know. Steven had married Gordon Richie. NOTE:
Found records of this family in Atlantic, IA. Records of marriage, death of Lucy buried there, etc. Laura may have, probably, born in Brighton, IA unless Lucy went elsewhere to have the child un noticed, as she was still connected to Daniel Pickens at the time.
From land records of Atlantic, Cass Co. Iowa. Know all men by these presents; that same Laura Whitman, formerly Laura Streeter and John Monroe Whitman, wife and husband, of the county of New York, and State of New York, in consideration of the sum of Four Hundred and Thirty Five Dollars in hand, paid by L.M. Wiseman of Cass County and state of Iowa do hereby sell and convey unto the said L. M. Wisemand the following described premises situated in the county of Cass in the state of Iowa, to wit: All of lot 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, excepting the south 25 feet of lot 1, 2, and 3 in block 110 in the city of Atlantic, in Cass Co., Iowa. According to the recorded plot thereof. ETC. dated 19 March 1898, in the presence of Edward J. Garrety. Signed and dated in New York County, N. Y., 12 Apr 1898.
See Eddy Families of America, page 366. Married Dec. 8, 1910 in New York City, N. Y. Gordon Ritchie, son of James and Mary Jane Gordon (Grant). They have no children. We know also of her marriage to Whitman because of the Land records and estate in Atlantic, Iowa. No further information at this time. See page 366 in Eddy Family in America, 1930. They had no children according to this book. My grandmother use to say that the Streeter children at one time visited them in Omaha, Neb., that is they visited with my Grandmother, Ida Ann Pickens, who would have been an Aunt to them.
ON STEPHEN EDDY
For further information on Stephen Streeter, see records on the Pickens, Eddy families. There are many records of Stephen and his sister and mother in Cass Co., Iowa. He had several land dealings and is also mentioned in the will of Alvin S. Eddy from N.Y. in 1911, as living in Omaha, Neb. Marriage Record #5, Cass Co., Iowa, Page 545 Mr. Stephen E. ON LUCY JEANETTE EDDY, COULD HAVE LOTS MORE TO SHARE on her too.
Married to Stephen R. Streeter and went to Minn. after the civil war. He apparently died there, she then moved to Atlantic, Cass Co., Iowa where she had several land transactions and left quite abundant records.
Summary of will:

I also was interested in what had happened to my Grandmother and Grandfather Eddy, parents of Lucy Janet Eddy who had gone to Oregon in 1863.
! Remarried Steven R. (Lon) Streeter and went to Minn. after the civil war. He died there, Laura then returned to Iowa, Atlantic, and used her maiden name of Eddy. She did, however, have a couple of records of land transactions where the name of L. J. Streeter was used. There are several land records of hers recorded in the court house records. There also are abundant records of her will and probate.
Census 18 June 1880 Atlantic, Cass Co., Iowa Eddy, Lucy J. age 37 widow, Keeping House born Vt. Father Vt. Mother Vt.
From the Diary of Daniel Pickens and William Ambrose, we knew that she was last known to be there, in the late 1890's. Register of Marriages, Cass County, Iowa License #448, Aug 8, 1883 To D.
Register of Death, Cass County, Iowa #1095 Dated 4 Sep 1896 Lucy Eddy, Female, White, age 65 years, housewife, died July 25, 1896.

This note is secured by mortgage upon lots 23, 24, block 6, Atlantic, Iowa with this provision in the Mortgage: "It is understood that this is given to secure the debts and costs in the estate of L. J. Eddy, Deceased, and when the debts and costs of said estate are paid, then this mortgage to be void, otherwise to remain in full force." That your administrator has not commenced suit to foreclose this mortgage for the reason that all the claims of the estate had not been established. That there is not much prospect yet of selling lot 4, blk. 6, Atlantic, Iowa. ALL OF WHICH IS RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED (Signed) E. M. Willard Administrator

In April term, 1899, a final report of the Estate of L. J. Eddy, Deceased was made. Total sales and assests came to $724.08 and total claims came to exactly $724.08 Sept term, 1897, a brief was filed by L.L. M. Whitman Lucy J. It seems to me through these records that his mother presented him with her horse and carriage as he was taking care of her just before she died.

Between William and Samuel, they had several items from Ezekiel and Mary, including the walking cane that Ezekiel used to walk from Iowa to Oregon, had a cap on the bottom tip of an old gun cartridge to keep it from wearing off so badly.
ON ISRAEL EDDY, SON of EZEKIEL and MARY
Israel had a toll road in Eddyville, had to pay toll to go thru the toll gate. People did not go around because he owned the only ground that had a shallow enough spot to ford the Yaquina River.
From records in possession of William Perry Eddy in Corvallis, Oregon as of July 1993. See page 366 of Eddy Family in America, 1930. He settled as a pioneer in Oregon in Lincoln Co., where there is at present a town named Eddyville in his honor.
Israel had many trades and talents. He practiced dentistry, also fitted glasses, a few pair of which William Eddy has in Corvallis.

Services Held for William A. Pickens
William A. Pickens, a long time resident of Fremont Co., was born March 12, 1854 and died Sept 23, 1946, at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs at the age of 92 years.  He became a member of the Methodist Church sometime in his early 20's.  William Ambrose, commonly known as "Brose", came to Sidney as a boy of 12 years.  He arrived with his father, Daniel, 80 years ago.
Sidney was, at the time, May 1866, just a frontier settlement.  Their first home was a log house just north of where the Methodist Church now stands.
His birth place was Brighton, in Washingon Co., Iowa.  He lived there where his father owned a sawmill on Skunk River until the Civil War.  When his father returned, badly wounded from the war, they went west.  The father drove a four hourse team to a covered wagon, and young Bose drove a big bay horse, hitched to a light spring wagon.  They were two weeks on the road.
He first attended a private school of twenty pupils, taught by the
Methodist minister, later he attended the public school in a brick building,
which is still standing, two blocks west of the square.  He attended Tabor
College one term in 1873.
He taught school in Fremont, Mills and Montgomery counties for several
terms.  1874 through 1880.  He then drove the stage coach from Villisca to
Atlantic, carrying mail and passengers.  While driving this stage route he met his future wife, Laura A. Fowkes, who was teaching school east of Villisca.
They were married June 26, 1880 at Red Oak, Iowa.  They began their married life at Essex, moving to Anderson shortly thereafter.
In the fall of 1883 they moved to Beatrice, Neb. where they lived for about 12 years.  The family returned to Sidney in April 1896.  They moved into the house in east Sidney, where he lived the remaining 50 years of his life.
Most of his adult life was spent as a contractor and builder.  Many homes
in Sidney and Fremont Co. are the products of his handywork and skill.
Three children preceeded him in death.  He is survived by a younger sister, Mrs. Ida A. Pickens of Los Angelos, Calif., his wife, Laura A. Pickens, 5 sons; William A. of Omaha, Edgar A. of Springfield, Mo., Ralph E. of Lincoln, J. Wayne of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Carl A. of Sidney, and one daughter, Mrs. Iva Kirkman of Benkelman, Neb.
