Legend passed on by some sources includde: "John was a man of great stature. He was 6 foot 8 inches in his stocking feet and 245 pounds. He was raised on his father's farm. When England finally drove the Colonies to rebellion, John was quick to enlist in the cause of freedom. His whole term of service was under Washington. At the close of the Revolution, still single, he emigrated to the district of TN. There he married a Miss Benson, quaintly described as "a little Dutch woman". Enlisted under command of Cpt. Nathan Hazlett in the Delaware Blues probably Jan 27, 1776.He was one of several Trustees for a Meeting House of the Methodist Episcapal Church, 24 Oct 1818. Paid $2 for land of Ephraim Burrow which began at Pleasant Garden Meeting House, registered 20 Jul 1819.
Lived in Lincoln Co., TN in 1820 listed as Male with 1 child, 10 (John), female, age 45, a dau. (Sally, age 10). Their place was called McNatt Hollow, near Lynchburg, TN. Lived in Lincoln Co., TN 1830, Male age 20-30, John was 80-90, Salley 80-90.
Father was Richared b. abt 1706 in Inverness, Scotland, mother was Rebecca Anderson, b. abt 1825, Delaware.
Marriage, Salley (Sarah) Benson, b. about 1744/1750 in Kent Co., Delaware. (Holland?) married before 1776 in TN.
