Elijah E. ANDERSON Jr.

Hi I will include back this same page, or parts of it, then send an outline that indicated my direct line to and past Elijah Anderson, the outline attached should be easy to follow, the return reference is also for all the information, should show more notes but am including as attached the chart for more details.

After 1850, Rosa Ann Bray married 1st Elijah Anderson
Ann is remarried to Joseph Foscett, and there is no trace of Elijah. The George Riley line has the story that his father was ill and he went to be with him, Rosa wouldn't go, so he left him. Our line heard that he went to the gold fields of CA and was never heard from again. Archie Anderson thinks he had more kids with a younger wife in NE. There are no divorce records to be found in Mahaska Co., IA or Jefferson Co., IA. Elijah was rec'd in Quaker meetings at Caesars Creek MM on 8 mo 31 day 1811; Green Plain MM was set off in Clark Co. from Caesar's Creek MM. He was very active in Green Plain MM, on the committee to get a meeting house, etc. Susannah Anderson was rec'd on request of her father, Elijah Sr. on 9 mo 20 day 1823. Suannah Andrews, formerly Anderson, was disowned because she married out of unity in 1829. In Elkhart Co, IN are found the marriage records of a Reuben Anderson and a Mary Jane Anderson which could well be these two persons. Elijah is listed on the 1840 index to census in Madison Twp., Clark Co, IA. Note from Clara W. Anderson of Odell, Neb. Dec 29, 1992, Elijah disappeared 1848/1849, last known to be around Blockton, Iowa. Started West. Another story is that he headed back to Ohio when his parents were ill and Rosa refused to go back with him, also that he died at about the time we loose him, abt. 1848/49. Credence to that is also that Rosa married so shortly after we loose track of him. So many stories, no proof, no history, is there a chance we can ever locate him? Elijah was a member of the Quaker Faith and we are able to follow him from Greenplain MM of the Hicksite branch, from the Ceasers Creek MM. He is Rpd for MOU 11-25-1837. 9-29-1838 He GCT White Lick MM, Ind. (Morgan Co.) He and family are ROCF Center MM Ohio 10-15-1836. 9-13-1837 Rosa Ann, former Bray, MOU CHM. 4-18-1838 Elijah Jr. ROCF Green Plain MM, Ohio. 1-15-1840 Elijah and W. in 1863. When the Excelsior Coal Co., moved its plant into the heart of Spring Creek community, the Quakers were forced out. The cemetery remained. There is a rumor that Elijah may have gone to the Gold Fields of Calif. and may never have returned. There is also a tradition that there were brothers that separated due to the Civil War and fought each other, some for the So. and some for the north. Daniel is said to have been killed in the Civil War.
This is where we loose this patriculiar family and do not know where or when Elijah and Rosy Ann Bray died. Opal Lousin wrote in Sept. 1989: "As for Elijah Anderson's absence I do not know what happened to him. I checked personally the records at Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa. and have not found anything about him. The divorce records are skimpy and he would have died before the death records were kept. I have searched other Elijah's records in Mt. Pleasant, Salem Co., and found another Elijah and from other information there is still another Elijah and one might one fit our case. "My mother used to listen to my grandfather Anderson tell about his war experiences and at that time he said that his father and mother separated because he wanted to go back, but the question is to where.
Rosanna said, "I have gotten this far (moving) and don't intend to go back. If you want to go, just go! and so he went. He is not listed in the census with his father, and possibly he got as far back as Morgan Co., Indiana. However, I cannot go there to the records and they are not very cooperative. Maybe I can think of some way to get the information. "There was a young woman who corresponded with me about with me about the Anderson line from Oregon, I think, and she and her mother thought they had information about Elijah's land ownership, etc. in Morgan Co., It is possible but when I asked for it, she didn't answer. We have to be extremely careful about this Elijah getting mixed up with the son of his uncle, Eli and Aunt Mary (Thatcher) Anderson who were living in Morgan Co., Ind. and moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa and had a son Elijah who went to the south and back to Oskaloosa. I feel that Elijah went to visit his uncle in Morgan Co., and then met Rosanna Bray there and married her. The father Elijah Anderson, Sr., stayed in Ohio with wife Susannah Cain and died an extremely poor man there. In the census of 1850, I think it was, his, wife Susanna and a Mary age 10 were living together . He died not to long after.... ... From the information I am giving you, you will see that Elijah and Susannah had married in Del. and I think possibly some or all of the children were born there. The Quaker records state that "The minor children Elijah, etc., were received into the Green Plain MM in 1823. Therefore, I think there must have been older children above 21 who went to Ohio in 1800 but I don't know from that information if that is ours or not. The mention was about land deal records. Ohio became a state in 1803. Hinshaw Quaker Records, Greenplain MM page 947 1823-9-20 Reuben, Susannah, Elijah and Mary, ch. She was living with Allen's half sister, Iowa. If we can find her other children we certainly could locate her resting place. Some of Rose Ann Bray's brothers were in Mo. still active with the Quakers. From notes sent by Betty Holmes, she attributes to information given her in 1981 from Opal Lousin: "... Mary, Elijah Jr., Elijah Sr. were very active in the Quaker Church in Ohio and helped get the meeting going at Greene Plains MM which was located at or near Selma, Ohio. Clark Co., was part of Greene and Clinton Counties so he may not have moved bodily to be able to attend this meeting which set off from Caesars Creek MM where he originally attended. Many brother came to this same general area soon after and can be found in the census. The Greene Plains Meeting was split three ways with the Anderson going with the Anti-Slavery group which was part of the cause that eventually their records do not appear in the Quaker records for research.
About the time Reuben and Hannah Anderson went to Montgomery Co., Ind., our ancestor Elijah Jr. went to Morgan Co., Ind. and married Rosa Ann Bray, the daughter of Abijah Bray and Isabella Scott in abt 1837. Also at about that time one of their uncles, Eli and wife and family went from Clinton Co., Ohio to the same place and eventually they moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa. Etc., see under Eli. From notes dated 1981 from Opal Lousin and Betty Holmes: .. "Elijah Jr. and Rosa Anderson were living in Pleasant Grove Twp. Mahaska Co., except that in the 1850 census record only Rosa'a name is shown as living there with her children including a son George R., and a son in law William Durbin and a son Nepoleaon Foscett were added to the census of Joseph Foscett in 1856 in Union twp. Mahaska Co., showing Allen R. as 19 born in Ind. living in Iowa 14 yrs.
Daniel as 14 yrs with the same info; George R. 10 born in Iowa, Napoleon B. age 7, Susan Durbin 18. In the 1860 census Susanna and William Durbin had three children one being named George for her brother. In 1857 the Foscett family with George Riley Anderson went to Jackson Twp., Taylor Co., leaving the other children behind. Elijah Jr. and Rosa Ann had been disowned by the Quaker Meeting for playing cards, dancing and attending a wedding out of unity (one not a Quaker). The three older children were reinstated in the good graces of the church, however. The last census of the Foscetts was in 1870 in Ringgold Co., and included Columbus and Rosa Iowa, who later married Giles Hunt. So far no divorce or death records for Elijah Anderson, Jr. have been found, and no death record for Rosa Bray Anderson Foscett. George stayed in the general area of Blockton, Iowa serving two times in the Civil War. Allen went to Kansas and no further record is found of Daniel for Ohio, See Elijah Anderson, Madison Twp., Clark Co., #145 1850 Roll 692, Clark Co., for 1840 see Pg. 71. From notes of Opal Lousin, 3 Dec 1992: ...."I do not think that our Elijah, Jr. was born 18 Jun 1817 as you show. Of course, it is possible but that is also the date of the birth of Eli's son (Eli was brother of Elijah, Sr.) I think our Elijah, Sr. had more children than the four mentioned as going to Green Plain MM, Clark County, Ohio because they were referred to as "younger children". I think we will eventually find that our Elijah, Jr.'s sister Susanna married an Andrews there in Clark Co., Ohio, but have not followed it. We need to concentrate on our own line directly and eventually then we can fill in the blank spaces. Elijah Anderson, Jr.'s records appear in the Green Plain MM, Clark Co., Ohio records and also in the White Lick MM, Morgan Co., Indiana records at the time he went to Indiana, married, and finally moved to Iowa. This cleared his membership in Ohio. From Opal Lousin. 3 Dec 1992: ..."I think the information you have regarding possiblity that our Elijah, Jr. married Martha Ann is wrong. It looks as if Eli's family is getting involved again in this instance. I wouldn't take time to check that out.
Personally, I think Elijah, Jr. left the family and started back to Indiana and died somewhere along the line between Oskaloosa and where his parents lived. To find the record of his death is going to be very difficult. Roseann must have known of his death to justify marrying again so soon to have Napoleon as soon as she did."... ......"There will be no Quaker Record for the death of Elijah Anderson,Jr. because he had been disowned in Iowa about 1846."... ..."Do you hear from David Anderson and what information have either of you received from him? I had given him far too much, I fear, and he was satisfied or discontinued his search. Also have you heard anything from Carol Morrison of the Eli - Mary (Thatcher) Anderson line via Martha Pounds? What information has she given either one of you? I do not believe that Elijah Anderson, Jr. went to the Gold Fields. I have often wondered if he and Daniel C. Anderson, his son, may have stayed together somewhere in Iowa. Only census records will show this - Mahaska County, Jefferson Co., Washington Co., Keokuk Co., or Henry County will likely show that. There are Iowa records (census) for odd years also other than the federal census years, i.e. 1856, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1925. ...."Carol Morrison said their research in Indiana showed that our Elijah & Rose Ann were issued their license on 20th of January 1837 so we can accept that date as for their marriage, I think now. Carol said she and her mother have some deed records for our Elijah and Rosy Ann in Indiana prior to 1847 and said she would copy them off for us. Then she quit corresponding with me. Her address in 1984 was 390 E. 41st St., Eugene, region 97405. It would be nice to have a copy of them and easier to get possibly than through the Morgan County, Ind. court house. She said that some records in Salt Lake City of value in our line is in Rev. Turners sibly the Elton Pounds lived in Nebraska when he gave the bible to the library rather than in Kansas. Carol said that James Anderson was b. 1733 and died Feb. 12, 1791. The birth date has to be wrong. She said Ann Anderson was born 1738 and died Oct. 22, 1804. I doubt this for a birth date but should be checked. we do not know her death date otherwise".... 1840 Census Records Morgan County, Indiana

See Oskaloosa, a separate census report, for Beals families for married sisters of Roseann Anderson; one was Ibby, another Keziah, etc."...
...."A recorder of district court records in Jefferson County, Iowa for me and wrote that she did not find a divorce there for Elijah and Roseann Anderson. I overlooked asking for any death record as they don't want to do genealogical research but referred me to Verna Baird."... Opal ...."In Ohio - Greene County - the probate Judge is in Xenia, Ohio 45385 and has marriage records from 1803; Clerk of Court has divorce and circuit court from 1802; County Recorder has deeds and plat maps form circuit court from 1802; County Recorder has deeds and plat maps from 1803 on: and Auditor has tax records from 1803. Clark County was taken from Green County about 1815-1820 so the oldest records would be in Greene County for us."... Opal ...."I think Carol Morrison was one who gave the information that an Elijah Anderson died 27 April 1847 and buried in West Union MM, Ind. I will see what I can find in this connection as soon as possible and if it pertains to us, will advise pronto."..

This same information appears in original Quaker records for Pleasant Plain MM at Iowa Yearly Office in Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., !A. From a letter of Opal Lousin, June 3, 1978.
Opal had visited and researched dozens of places for records, in Iowa,Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, etc. She adds, "Elijah and Rosa Anderson were disowned from the Pleasant Plain MM because the attended a marriage not in accord with the strict Quaker Rules, (probably their Daughter's), attended a dance and danced and arently refused and, therefore, were disowned.
After that no more will ever appear in the Quaker records."... ..."Salem MM in Henry Co., Iowa, was the first Quaker Meeting in Iowa and in fairly hostile country due to Indians still being there in 1840's. It was also an Underground RR station for runaway slaves who were harbored by the Quakers who did not believe in slavery. Pleasant Plain MM was set off from Salem MM."... NOTES TO MARJORIE METZGER 8-21-1971 from Opal ..."Jane Hargraves told her daughter that she never knew very much about her father's folks but that her grandfather was sick and wanted to go back to Iowa (I think it was suppose to be Indiana) because he was sick or one of his parents was sick. Rosa was supposed to have told him, "Well, go then, and he did."
Someone thought it might have been Elijah's parents that were ill rather than Elijah.  Iowa (Rose Iowa Foscett) married Giles Hunt and they lived at Witchita, Kansas.  My brother, Charlie, thinks Rosa Foscett and her family were living in Nodaway Co., near Rovenswood, Missouri in 1889. He believes he remembers Iowa and Giles Hunt coming to Blockton about 1910 or so and going out west. Rosa was living in Iowa in 1870 but gave her written consent in 1863 for my grandfather, George Anderson, to marry in Worth Co., Missouri because he was on only 18. It was between his two periods of service in the Civil War.".. Opal notes dtd. Sept 1989, she wrote that she had an Aunt Cora Anderson Patrick who was the oldest of the family and knew both her grandmothers and among her papers her daughter found the notation that Rosanna had died in 1890 but nothing further. I have searched Ringgold, Taylor Co. records in Iowa and Worth Co., Mo. for her death. Death Records began in Iowa in 1880 but were not complete due to the funeral directors not turning in the information to the clerk of the County. From a letter of Medessa Hartgrave, she had remembered seeing her as a little girl in Neb.  She was living with her dau. Rosa Iowa Fawcett. Notes you sent are: 13. ELIJAH5 ANDERSON (ELIJAH SR4, JAMES3, JAMES SR2, THOMAS1) was born 1817 in OH. He married ROSA ANN BRAY January 20, 1837 in Morgan Co., IN, daughter of ABIJAH BRAY and ISABELLA SCOTT. She was born 1820 in Lick Creek MM, IN. Notes for ELIJAH ANDERSON: After 1850, Rosa Ann is remarried to Joseph Foscett, and there is no trace of Elijah. The George Riley line has the story that his father was ill and he went to be with him, Rosa wouldn't go, so he left her. Our line heard that he went off to the CA gold rush, and Archie Anderson thinks he had more kids with a younger wife in Nebraska. There are no divorce or death records to be found in Mahaska County or Jefferson County. Elijah Anderson was rec'd in Quaker Meeting at Caesars Creek on 8 31 1811; Green Plain MM was set off in Clark County from Caesar's Creek MM. He was very active in Green Plain MM, on the committee to get a Meeting House, etc. Susannah Anderson was rec'd on request 4 22 1882 at Green Plain and children Reuben , Susannah, Elijah and Mary were rec'd on the request of father Elijah Sr on 9 30 1823. Susannah Andrews, formerly Anderson, was disowned because she married out of unity in 1829. In Elkhart Co., IN are found the marriages of a Reuben Anderson and a Mary Jane Anderson which could well be these two person's. Elijah is listed on the 1840 index to census in Madison TWP, Clark Co., IA. Notes for ROSA ANN BRAY:
MM is a Quaker "Monthly Meeting". Children of ELIJAH ANDERSON and ROSA BRAY are: i. SUSANNAH6 ANDERSON, b. 1838, Green Plain MM, OH or Morgan Co., IN; m. WILLIAM DURBAN, Abt. 1855, Mahaska Co., IA. 18. ii. ALLEN RICHARD ANDERSON, b. May 13, 1839, Mooresville, Morgan, IN; d. October 09, 1917, Morrowville, Washington, KS. iii. DANIEL C ANDERSON, b. 1842, Salem MM, IA. Notes for DANIEL C ANDERSON: There is some question about whether this Daniel belongs, or was of another Anderson family living in the same county. Needs to be resolved. iv. ROBERT ANDERSON, b. 1842, Morgan, Mooresville, IN.19. v. GEORGE RILEY ANDERSON, b. June 10, 1845, Pleasant Grove, Jefferson Co., IA or Mahaska Co., IA; d. April 02, 1917, Blockton, IA.

Rosa Ann BRAY

Was in a photo taken in 1890, the late Mrs. Joseph Foscett.  Sent by Clara W. Anderson, Odell, Neb.  Dec 92.

Also found as Rosy Ann and Rosanna.  She was an active Quaker and her family had come from Cane Creek MM., S.C. to West Union to Salem MM, Henry Co., Iowa.

Listed in Morgan Co., Indiana Marriages: Rosanna Bray and Elijah Anderson (Issued) 20 Jan 1837

Obituary of Goerge Riley Anderson, her son, stated that the Foskett family, with him included, had gone to Jackson Twp. in 1857, with other of the Bray family?)

From notes of Opal Lousine, 6 Oct 1982 to Betty Holmes I can find nothing further regarding Rosa Ann Bray Anderson Foscett after the 1870 Ringgold Co., Iowa census.  Her sons and dau. by second marriage went to Kansas or Ok.
Napoleon Bonaparte Foscett, Christopher Columbus Foscett and Rosa Iowa Foscett who married Giles Hunt, reportedly a GAR veteran. "Lum" stopped by Neb. and Kansas on his way to Wichita, Archie wrote once.  These three would have been born 1848, 1857, and 1859 respectively in case you ever run across them in any census.
From notes dtd. Summer of 1981 of Betty Holmes and Opal Lousin: "Rosa was born in 1819 in Orange Co., Ind. following the birth of her brother Allen Richard Bray.  They moved to Morgan Co., Ind. with his parents and younger
sisters were Abijah lost two children near Mooresville, Ind. and then in early 1840 moved at the same time as Elijah Anderson Jr. and Rosa to Iowa.  Possibly some of Seth Wilson Bray's descendents can be found in Kansas as they orignially settled in Crawford Co., Ks.  A desperate effort has been made to locate other Bray's in Iowa but no concrete evidence of any so far have been found unless a further search is made of the census reports which
unfortunately now are all in miserably prepared micofilms..."

From a letter of Opal's in Sep 1989, she wrote that she had an aunt Cora Anderson Patrick who was the oldest of the family and knew both her grandmothers and among her papers her daughter found the notation that Rosanna had died in 1890 but nothing futher.  I have searched Ringgold, Taylor County records in Iowa and Worth Co., in Mo. for her death.  Death records began in Iowa in 1880 but were not complete due to the funeral director's not turning in the information to the clerk of the County.

From a leter of Madessa Hartgrave, she had remembered seeing her as a little girl in Neb.  She was living with her dau. Rosa Iowa Fawcett.

From note by Opal Lousin, 3 Dec 1992.   ..."Missouri Division of Health, Vital Records, Jefferson City, Mo.  65101 (Unless they moved) may help search in some way or tell you whom to contact regarding Rosa Bray Anderson Foskett or the others in Missouri.  There will be a fee probably.  Also State Historical Society of Missouri, Hitt and Lowry Streets, Columbia, Mo.  65201 (May have moved to St. Louis area) or (Jefferson City) might help by searching their files of biographical material for all the counties in the state.  The Missouri Historical Society is separate from the State Historical Society and is located in St. Louis.  I have not had any luck getting any cooperation from them.  They frown on out of state people."...

Betty Holmes and Opal corresponded concerning research for the resting place and date of Rosanna, ..."Since you have had records checked forNodaway Co., Mo. there is no point in doing it again to find death information for Rosa Foskett.  Because you and I have checked Worth, Gentry and Nodway Counties, there is no point in doing them again.
I think it is most likely that Rosanna was living either with Giles and Rosa Iowa Hunt, or with Christopher Columbus Foskett or Napolean Bonaparte Foskett, probably somewhere in Missouri.  If not found in the census there, the only suggestion would be to follow them to Kansas and Oklahoma - Seth Bray in Crawford Co. and I don't know where the letter from Giles Hunt came from but it was much later and they may have moved several times.

NOTES from Opal to Marjorie Metzger, 1971
My cousin said her mother remembered visiting Rosa Foscett and that she wore a little white apron and cap and that they were Quakers, her father having been a Quaker minister.  I hope this is true because the Quakers kept quite an accurate record of births, deaths, and marriages of all  the members of their congregations as well as removal certificates or dismissal (disownment) from the meeting.

Notes of Betty Louise Holmes of Fallon, NV, 22 Oct 2007 Rosa Ann was the daughter of a Quaker family but was disowned for her lively activities of dancing, playing cards and attending a weddingout of unity.  She may have died in 1890.  She appeared on the 1890 census of Smith, Worth Co., MO in the household of her son, Napolean Foskett.

HI Larry,
I picked up the mail late this afternoon and found the DVD.. I tried transferring the PAD files but it was going to be 204.MB (almost 34,000 pages when transferred)...OUCH

So I settled for the Anderson Descendents files which transferred to only 335 pages!!! Right now I am not planning on printing it out.

I did pick up an error...my great-grandmother Cora Anderson married William Henry Patrick (not William Edgar Patrick). I will fill you in later as I go over things more closely.

Patrick did find, in the Anderson/Patrick box his mother had, the document the our grandmother Beaulah found, where Rosa gave permission for George Riley to marry. He needs to scan it. (It had never been entered into the official records in Worth County--county seat was Grant City---Opal had thought Sheridan was county seat).

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU You really have a wonderful document. I didn't realize how much Opal had done and searched. I will be able to fill you in more on my tie in to the Andersons through George Riley's daughter Cora Anderson Patrick.
Ginny

Interesting about the possibility of Rosa being buried in Ravenwood (not RAVENSWOOD). We used to drove by it all the time going from the farm to Maryville......

Robert ANDERSON

This is a name spoken of, mentioned but disputed as to real person or not. No records have been shown to validate this Robert Anderson.

John Franklin ANDERSON

Marriage notes for John Anderson and Nancy Cameron, "There is a copy of John's marriage certificate which was located by Archie Anderson.  The license was applied for Feb. 21, 1882.  Date of marriage Feb. 23, 1882.  His place of residence was listed as Washington Co, KS.  Nancy's was Cass Co., NE.  They were married by C. F. Graves, Pastor of the Congretional Church."

Wedding license had 22 Feb 1882 at Weeping Water, Cass Co., NE to Nancy Jane Cameron, Age 15.  nacny's parents were Allen A. Cameron and Mary J. Mussey.

A note of Opal Lousin said that John died near St. Joe, Mo.

Pearl Emory Anderson wrote on 20th June 1973:  "John Franklin was a
strongman with the circus.  One of the fastest runners of the 100 yard dash in 10 seconds.)

Aug 1979  A Brief story of Archie Anderson's search for his uncle John Anderson, oldest brother of Thomas Anderson, who had died at age 30, but no relative seemed to know where.  A family bible gave the date as 27 Sep 1889.
Since boyhood Archie had been fascinated with stories of his uncle, who had been in the Campbell Circus as a trick rider and stunt man, had been known to be married to Nancy Jane Cameron, a part Mohawk Indian girl, and at the time of his death had 4 children.  Another child, Dan, was born after his fathers death, and in 1894, at the death of Nancy Jane four of the children had been sent to Neb. to John's parents, Allen R. and Hannah Anderson who raised them with the help of other relatives.
Members of the family had heard that Thomas had gone to the Troy, Kansas area at the time of John's death, but not much seemed to be passed down to later relatives.
Archie became obsessed with the idea of finding where John was buried.
After much talking, letter writing, etc., it was suggested that he was married in Weeping Water Area, so in 1978, Archie and Clara made a trip to Weeping Water and did find and get a zerox copy of the wedding license.  Includied in that paper was the name of Nancy Jane's parents: Father - Allen A. Cameron, and mother Mary J. Mussey.
At that time we could find nothing more about their whereabouts.  We began writing to various agencies trying to find a death certificate, and not until the summer of 1973, did we find a likely trail.  We wrote to the State Library of Kansas, and they referred us to a genealogist who would search records for $4.00 a hour and by giving her all the info we could, she soon wrote back with a letter stating she had found a news item from Doniphan, Kansas telling exactly what we were searching for - she enclosed a zerox copy of the microfilm page of the Troy Chiefton, Troy Kansas, 3 Oct 1889.  Doniphan column new item, as follows:

"John Anderson and family, from Nebraska, came down to Geary City, visiting relatives.  The man was taken sick and from report was sick nearly two weeks before medical aid was called in.  Finally they moved down to Doniphan, and Dr. Moore was called in and did all he could for him, but he died.  They were very poor and the people here administered to their wants as best they could.  The trustee was called in and arranged for the funeral.  He was buried in the Doniphan Cemetery (Later in the same column)  The man Anderson who died here last week, leaves a wife and four children, they went to Nebraska with relatives."

This item give us needed info, and on Mon, Aug 27, Archie, Clara and Daughter, Jolene Darnold started to Troy, KS.

We left Odell, Neb. at 9:30 on that Monday morning and arrived at Troy at noon, at dinner at the local restaurant, then went to the county courthouse to see what we might find that could be useful to us.  We had no been able to find a Geary City on the map and found out it is now an abandoned town, but was about 5 miles from Doniphan.  We had thought if we could find the name of the relatives they were visiting it might shed some light, so we asked to see records of people living in Geary City in 1889, which turned out to be in Wayne precinct.  The records were in nicely bound books, but were in an attic room where they had just been piled in stacks, with no logical order, hodgepodge on the floor - it was a hot day, the room stuffy and small, but even the very uncomfortable, Jolene and Clara spent a good hour finding the right book with an alphabetized list of residents in 1889.  (Archie wasn't able to breath in close air like that so had gone to the car to wait.)  At long last we found the right volume, and found the name of Allen A. Cameron age 89, and Mary J. Cameron age 78, these being Nancy Jane's parents.

At the court house a clerk, very kindly drew a map showing us how to find the Doniphan cemetary which is northeast of the town.  A very irregular road and she even suggested we contact the cemetary caretaker who lived on the road enroute to the cemetary.  When we arrived at that home, Robert and Iva Hink, Iva found no record of John Anderson, but volunteered to go with us to the cemetary and show us where the "Potters Field" was, and we were delighted to have her guide us.  The cemetary is on top of a very high hill - 3/4 miles west of the Missouri River wooded all around.  So we felt very certain we have been within a matter of a few feet the burial place of John F. Anderson.
We left there about 5:30 and headed toward Atchison, then on west to Holton, and south of Mayetts where we inquired where some "dug wells" might be as Archie was now in search of a well that his Grandfather Allen R. had dug for the gov't on the Pottawatomie Indian Reservation, having some sons to help him, at least George and Thomas had helped.  We were directed about 4 miles into the reservation to a well that was still being used to water cattle, had been dug and walled very neatly and sturdily with rock - so Archie was satisfied that at last he had seen a well his grandfather and father had dug back in the 1800's.
By the time we got back to Holton for supper, it was 7:30, but we came on home arriving back in Odell, Neb. at 11:00 pm.
From a note of Opal Lousin, 3 Dec 1992.  ..."You probalby have this information which I hurriedly copied at Archie Anderson's home:

Allen R. Anderson's son was John Franklin Anderson b. 29 July 1859 d. 27 Sept 1889 m. 22 Feb. 1882 at Weeping Water, Cass Co., Neb. to Nancy Jane Cameron, age 15 b. 6 March 1867 and died 8 May 1894 and they had:
